Unfortunately, while wanting to like STRANGE DARLING, I had guessed the twist by about 15 minutes in.

<GASP> Women can be serial killers too!

On the whole, it just wasn’t as clever a film as it thought it was. I liked the non-linear timeframes, but for those with even a rough knowledge of the nouvelle vague, and Tarantino’s many riffs on the form, it wasn’t quite the revelation it set out to be. The chapter headings were a nice touch though, I must admit.

And while I liked the film’s upfront claim that it was shot entirely on 35mm film (by none other than actor-turned-debut-cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi), it didn’t actually look that much different - probably a reflection on how far digital camera technology had come in the last twenty years.

All in all, a solid thriller, but when you put this up against something as strong as THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY, this really feels like a bit of a damp squib.
