Certainly not the greatest film ever made and the height difference between Helen Hayes and Gary Cooper was distracting, but damn I really really enjoyed it. I am sure that if I had read Hemingway's novel before watching the adaptation I'd be let down, but I haven't and so I wasn't. What a beautiful story with good direction, an excellent and ahead-of-its-time performance from Cooper, and gorgeous cinematography. Cooper is incredibly natural and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that James Dean or Marlon Brando were influenced by his acting style. It feels very actors studio/method acting-esque. I would recommend this to anyone looking to watch more precode films!
