Dune

Dune

*watched the alan smithee cut*

anyway here’s my thots™️

 too_long_daft_punk.mp3

the entire opening was 8 minutes long and set up all the extra additions and pacing problems that made the film a slog to get through with its 3 hour run time.

the narration was awful and i didnt like it at all, it was describing everything that could easily be understood without narration that happened in the theatrical cut.

obviously i enjoyed majority of this cut as they were just straight from the theatrical cut but like lynch not wanting his name on this cut,, understandable it’s not great and the theatrical release is a masterpiece.

extra additions i enjoyed were probably just being able to enjoy more of the set and costume design and take in this world more, lynch’s adaptation of dune is honestly wonderful and i personally find it an improvement upon the novel.

the novel has so much world building that’s key to understanding the plot that personally i found it incomprehensible and overwhelming at times in terms of what was happening if i’d not had the film as a point of reference. essentially lynch’s theatrical cut took the surrealist elements and the basics of dune’s plot and trimmed all the fat and viewing it this way, the 3 hour alan smithee cut is them trying to sew the fat back on with terrible narration.

anyway stan david lynch and his biggest regret the theatrical cut of dune (1984) 🤙
