I have seen this film many, many times since it came out in 1999 (including opening weekend!). Over time, interpretations and feelings have changed about it - it is quite bizarre and ambiguous. This time around, I really felt that the key to understanding what Kubrick is trying to communicate is to focus on Alice and her motivations. So here is my latest read on the film.

This is Eggers' swing for fences epic remake of the classic. Unsettling and morose, the film is one long hallucinatory fever dream though a grim Central European winter. Though the pacing may seem portentous and sluggish at times, the story is there to serve the deep dark visuals which amount to a landmark of cinematography. Bathed in blue moonlight and cast in suffocating shadow, this films grabs you until we reach that final burst of daylight. This is visionary filmmaking. 🏰🩸😱🧛‍♂️

A dull and predictable thriller that feels like streaming service filler. Gordon Levitt brings nothing intriguing to the role and the film's final act reveal is pretty easy to see coming. This film is not trying to explain "us" to ourselves, instead these multiple, sprawling narratives capture moments of the deeper political truths that surround us. Curtis' technique is unfocused but also dazzling. This film goes further than his previous work with the use of musical dream sequences. Overall, this is not the one we have been waiting for but it is certainly a trip worth taking.
