Rey’s review published on Letterboxd:
I thought this would be one of the moments when a film gets shitted on horribly and it’s not even that bad. For that reason, I was somehow excited to start this film.
I enjoyed the first 30 minutes of the movie. Zoe Saldaña killed her performance, and I was interested in the plot. Some of the songs were not that horrible, in my opinion, so I thought I was correct in assuming this film was getting overly hated for no apparent reason. Boy, was I wrong!
The last hour or so of this movie left me sleeping and bored out of my mind. I think I stopped making an effort to rewind if I missed any subtitles because I completely lost interest in this movie once the plot turned into flirting with concealed weapons and whatever “My pussy still hurts just by thinking of you” was.
Overall, this movie has a few good musical numbers with a boring plot. It feels out of touch with the topics they're trying to bring attention to, and the casting could've been better for a movie based in Mexico.
I'm shocked that this got released and won the awards it did.
