ArtandTrash’s review published on Letterboxd:
Poor Things (2023), directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
A Frankenstein-esque eccentric accelerated coming-of-age story with a steampunk aesthetic and a touch of magical realism from the maestro of Greek Weird Wave cinema. Emma Stone deserves that Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination she received. I hope she wins.
I've been a fan of Lanthimos since Dogtooth (2008). If you enjoy his previous work, and other films such as The City of Lost Children (1995) or Brazil (1985), you will likely appreciate this one. It completely stands on its own, but that might give you a hint of some of the flavor here.
The frank depictions of sexuality, unencumbered by either moralizing on the one hand or mere titillation on the other, was refreshing to see in a modern movie.
I wasn't expecting this to be so damn funny and overall uplifting and joyous.
