Joker: Folie à Deux

Joker: Folie à Deux

Much like its predecessor, Joker: Folie à Deux thinks it’s much smarter than it actually is but somehow manages to say far less. I had heard it attempts to skewer toxic fandom, but it is very uninterested in touching that.

It's far too timid to embrace the musical format but it also doesn't want to be like the original. As a result, it just flounders in this awkward middle ground with uninteresting and uninspired musical numbers and uncomfortable vocal performances. There's not much visually to latch on to despite Lawrence Sher's lovely work as cinematographer.

Lady Gaga is absolutely wasted in this role. Her character is just kind of there and lacks any semblance of agency. She's giving it her all and she's by far the most interesting part of this, the character is severely mishandled. Harry Lawtey demonstrates promise as Harvey Dent, but the film gives him very little to do as well.

I didn't care for the original but at least an attempt was made to try and say something. This is just soulless.
