The Exorcist: Believer

The Exorcist: Believer

Yoo the final exorcism scene is a clusterfuck. It was actually funny.

Some scattered comments:

Leslie Odom Jr. is a mighty fine actor that single-handedly makes this film watchable. But please note that this film is actually visually very hard to watch. It is so poorly lit and maybe poorly graded too. Additionally, the crew clearly has no clue on shooting people of darker skin complexion.

The demonic lore goes from non-existent to stingless. And, overall, many missed opportunities to explore more delicate subjects!

The pacing of the scarier scenes feels so odd.

The first act of this movie is not a horror movie. It is so slow and builds up some tension but hardly not enough as the obnoxiously frenetic sound mixing would suggest.

The movie is very hygienic and pulls a lot of punches. There’s really little controversy and little originality to its attempts to inspire any sort of fear. Absolutely no point in coming in to this expecting anything similar to the 1973 film, and when it does attempt to display something, it feels very pusillanimous.

Mid way through the second act, the demon finally speaks and for those of us who cherish the first film it feels painfully clean and calculated.

Also weirdly enough there is barely no music or soundtrack here. No eery effects, no sirens, no voices, nothing. Just an eventual rehash of the original tune.

Sigh. Then towards the end of the second act they needlessly reintroduce Ellen Burstyn and decide to take a shit on the legacy of the original movie, and then to smear with it for the rest of the film.
