Alex’s review published on Letterboxd:
A real Christmas movie and one of the greatest romance films of all time. Things I noticed on a rewatch:
- It's been years, but I forgot how small of a story it is. Every single element, from the grand balls to the spectacular design gowns, exists only in relation to the strange pathological romance of the two protagonists.
- The way PTA misleads the viewer to think the unequal relationship of Alma and Woodcock can only end in murder, only to reveal that their neurotic contradictions are the very source of their power and love, heightens every scene on a rewatch. Their conflicts were complements. The Beauty chose to destroy the Beast and build him back up again.
- The visual atmosphere is striking and truly unique despite the lack of a cinematographer. Nothing is too colorful. The texture resembles a design object that will grow old, like the gowns and fading lace and wedding dresses that turns to ash.
- Most heterosexual romance stories are toxic by default, let alone a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Romanticizing this story is my toxic trait, but I can't help it.
