After the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney in 2019, there were a lot of questions regarding what would come of Fox’s Marvel films. While it does not totally answer these questions, Deadpool and Wolverine manages to give us insight into this by its full embrace of the tone set by the first two Deadpool films and how it chooses to honor the legacy of the Fox Marvel films in a way that stays true to the artistic expression present in the Deadpool films.
As a lifelong fan of comic books and the films they’ve inspired, it was truly special to be able to see Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds play Wolverine and Deadpool together. In addition to their charismatic on-screen dynamic, it was really nice to see the emotional bond between their characters in the story. More specifically, I enjoyed the way the film chooses to highlight the struggles they both face regarding their roles as heroes and how they learn to fully embrace who they are, regardless of any flaws that they feel about themselves. Truly looking forward to seeing if we can see any more collaborations between Jackman and Reynolds in Marvel and I’m grateful to Shawn Levy, the creative team, and Marvel for this film.
