The guy who introduced this was talking like fucking Tim Heidecker, it was so baffling. At one point he went "Yeah, well, uhh, John Hinckley.. er, uh, John Lennon.. who was killed by.. Anyway, people who do.. maybe bad things sometimes are influenced by, uh, characters.. in movies... Did you guys know that 'Palme d'or' means 'golden palm'?"

What I think is important to understand about Lynch, at least in assessing this particular work of his, is that he is not interested in participating in the economy of the “real”. Or, the economy of the cinematic meta-truth — he operates in his own mannerist-impressionist language, as can be uniquely identified in each of his projects. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? 1966
Reminded me a lot of that one scene from Faces. Really wretched film, I had a great time with it. Nichols turns the modern domestic space into a gruesome arena (Violence! Violence!); the happy couple's home is made battlegrounds-cum-mausoleum, and it seems as if the walls have seen more than a few corpses pass through already. It's a hard thing to sit through, but the ideas are all very easy—the games are zero-sum; Taylor's and Burton's marriage is over before…
