Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado opened at the Savoy Theatre, London, in 1885. The Cocheco Manufacturing Company created this 'The Mikado' cotton ensemble in 1886, featuring scenes inspired by the opera on the patchwork effect skirt. From
Lady's blue silk gala attire, made in 1867 for the Hungarian coronation of Franz Joseph I (also Emperor of Austria). After minor alterations, the ensemble was worn by Gabriella Szecsenyi to the coronation of King Charles IV of Hungary in 1916.
