[[뉴저지주]]의 예로부터 대서양 연안의 휴양지로 유명했으나, [[제2차 세계 대전|제2차세계대전]] 이후 동부의 여러 도시와 마찬가지로 쇠퇴하면서 [[실업]]과 [[범죄]] 문제가 심각했다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위하여 뉴저지 주에서는 이 도시를 새로운 관광지로 개발하기 위하여 [[도박]]장을 도입하기로 하였다. 이로써 [[1978년]] [[카지노]]가 들어섰으며, 그와 더불어 각종 위락시설과 숙박시설도 개발되어 각지에서 많은 사람들이 찾아오면서 경제가 다소 회복되었다. 미국에서 [[네바다주]] [[라스베이거스]] 다음가는 도박의 도시로 유명하다.
 
보드워크(Boardwalk)는 [[레스토랑]], 상점, [[카지노]]를 지닌 [[호텔]]들이 정렬되어있다정렬되어 있다. 거기에 있는 회관은 집회소로 있어오다가, [[1929년]] 재편되어 도시의 경계표가 되었다. 현재는 [[콘서트]] 홀과 [[스포츠]] 경기장으로 이용되며, [[1921년]]부터 [[2004년]]까지 미스 아메리카 이동 무대의 배경이 되었다. 5개의 [[부두 (시설)|부두]]들이 [[대서양]]으로부터 보드워크까지 퍼져있으며퍼져 있으며, 부두들의 흥미있는 장소들은 아트센터와 [[쇼핑센터|쇼핑몰]]이다.
