hello editor’s note
WELCOME AUGUST!
O
n the cover of our last issue, we boldly exclaimed “We Are Back!” But the truth is, we never left. Yes, last month we printed our first print issue since March and yes, it felt great circulating the magazine in the community again. In fact, we’re distributing to more locations than ever. Now that schools are closed, you can pick up your monthly copy of S.I. Parent almost anywhere: the grocery store, the post office, the gym, the bank, daycares, doctor’s offices, restaurants, dance schools, and the list goes on. By the way, if you own a business and would like to receive copies of S.I. Parent for distribution, email [email protected]. While we were on a print hiatus, our team was very busy keeping Staten Islanders in good spirits and updated digitally on local developments, Covid-19 news and important resources for families via email, social media and at siparent.com. Although we are once again distributing our publication to the Staten Island community -- as we have for over 30 years -- you can still get digital updates you won’t find anywhere else by subscribing to our newsletters, following us on Facebook and Instagram and bookmarking siparent.com. In more bittersweet news, longtime S.I. Parent Sales Executive Ilene Cohen is retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Ilene for the past six years and can honestly say she is one of the kindest and most genuine people I’ve ever met. I can speak on behalf of the entire S.I. Parent team when I say she will be greatly missed by clients and colleagues alike, and we wish her all the best in her retirement. We love you, Ilene! With just a month of vacation left, you’ll need to be kept in the loop on summer events and back-toschool news. Subscribe to our newsletters so you don’t miss a beat. Go to siparent.com/signup and start getting all the info your family needs to navigate life with kids on Staten Island. Stay happy, stay healthy, and stay sane!

EDUCATORS WEIGH IN ON CURRENT TOPICS
raising kids
Dear Teacher,
Experienced educators and authors Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts give solid advice about everything school and education-related. Parents should send questions and comments to [email protected]
QUESTION: My second-grade daughter has very poor concentration. Her teacher commented on this several times last year. Does that mean that the child has ADHD? – Wondering ANSWER: When children have trouble concentrating in school and are overly active, disruptive, and inattentive, many teachers and parents jump to the conclusion that a child has ADHD. However, to find the answer to your question you need to start with a routine visit to your daughter’s primary-care doctor when it is possible for you to do so. Tell the doctor about the teacher’s observation of your daughter. You might even want to bring the child’s report card along to the appointment. Ask the doctor to test her for ADHD. Some doctors will do the evaluation. However, others will give you a referral to an ADHD expert because testing for ADHD takes several hours and also a large amount of time to analyze the test. If your doctor does not give you a referral and you still want testing, you should seek out a referral from the special education teacher, a psychologist or guidance counselor at your child’s school. Here are the areas that will be used in helping to make the diagnosis of your daughter: • Social history: a typical day in your daughter’s life
• Medical history: any medical concerns that your daughter might have • Family history: ADHD runs in families • Strengths and weaknesses: activities the child can and can’t focus on • Education: how your daughter is doing academically By the time the clinical interview is over, most experts who diagnose and treat people with ADHD will have a good idea of whether your daughter has ADHD. QUESTION: My children in elementary and middle school spent way too much time on homework before their school went online. How much time should they have been spending? Are there any shortcuts that could lessen their homework time when school resumes? – Too Much Time ANSWER: One dividend of online schooling was that most students found their homework time reduced as much of it was done during online classroom sessions. However, you are definitely right that your children were probably spending too much time on homework before they went to online schooling. Just about every study done on homework time reinforces your view. Teachers routinely exceed the most common recommendation of 10 to 20 minutes of work for first grade. And this amount of time should grow by 10 minutes

LIPM for every year in school. This means the third grader should be working no more than 30 minutes and the seventh grader no more than 70 minutes. And the recommended time limit for high school seniors will be 120 minutes. The unfortunate fact about homework time is that children who exceed or greatly exceed the recommended homework time limits do no better on standardized tests than those who are closer to the recommended time limits. At first homework assignments serve the purpose of establishing responsibility. Later on, they should be reinforcing classwork. And Harris Cooper, psychology professor at Duke University and an expert on homework, would also like to see a bonus question that prepares students for the next day’s classwork. In some school districts, the value of homework is limited to 20 percent of a student’s grade. Where the effect of homework on grades is minimal, parents may want to stop their children from working too long on homework. Of course, this should be discussed fully with the teacher. Also, it is very smart for parents to work with their school’s parent/teacher organization to set up a homework time policy. Some schools will only assign four nights of homework a week. Perhaps, the best shortcut in limiting homework time is for students or students and parents in the early grades to get out all assignments and make a plan about the order in which they will do the assignments. Another shortcut is for students to skip problems that truly stump them after they study similar problems in textbooks and notes. These are likely to be discussed in class so students get a grasp on them, or they can be taken up with the teacher. Another effective homework shortcut is for students to have a planner with their work placed where it belongs as well as having homework assignments clearly listed. This stops time being wasted looking for materials needed for homework or trying to find out what their assignments are. QUESTION: When my child reads, she has trouble recognizing words that have short vowels. For example, she might confuse let, lot and lit. She is in first grade. Is this a common problem? – Reading Problem ANSWER: Having problems with short vowel sounds is not unusual for beginning readers. Not knowing the short vowel sounds can make spelling difficult too. Here’s why. Consonant sounds are generally sounded out easily as they are largely crisp clear sounds. On the other hand, there are small differences between how short vowels are said. The word family approach can make learning the short vowel sounds easier. For example, the “an” family teaches the short “a” sound as different consonants are placed in front of it to produce van, man, tan, and can. We have developed 126 short word family stories with games called Skinny Books that will help your child learn short vowel sounds and to read hundreds of words. You can find out more about them on dearteacher.com.

Little League friends John Gano (left) and Christian Speciale (right) doing the pandemic version of the high five after their game against each other.
A ‘DIFFERENT’ SEASON TO REMEMBER BY JOE LOVERDE
A local sportswriter and coach for youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years.
was most disappointed about all stars.” Not having a chance to compete for the chance for an unforgettable summer with the all-star tournament was disappointing to the kids and parents alike. “Not too many teams, when they start the season, have a legitimate shot to go to the regionals in Bristol, Connecticut, to be on ESPN, to go to the Little League World Series and play on TV,” said James Speciale, Christian’s dad and the manager of the Great Kills all-star teams that had all that success the past two years. “This team would have had the talent to do that. “I really felt bad for the kids. They have been talking about it for a year.” While South Shore Little League, which was expected to be Great Kills’ biggest obstacle in getting off the Island, and Mid-Island Little League have had teams reach the World Series, no team from Great Kills has made it. It’s an experience like no other for a Little League player — and their families.
F
or kids like Christian Speciale and John Gano, this was supposed to be a special Little League season. As 12-year-olds, it was their final year in Little League — their last chance to run 60-foot bases, face pitching from 45 feet away and swing for the fences 200 feet from home plate. But for Speciale and Gano and a bunch of their pals from Great Kills, it was also supposed to be an extra special season. “Little League in general is really fun,” said Gano, a tall, lanky pitcher. “But also, this year, everyone felt we had a good chance to make it to Williamsport.” As in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and the Little League World Series. The Great Kills National all-star team won the Staten Island District 24, New York City and New York State 10-year-old championships in 2018. Last year, that same group of boys won the Eastern Regional as 11-year-olds. This year, with Great Kills Little League reducing its number of charters from two to one, the best players from its American all-star team were expected to be combined with the National team to make one super team. The anticipation to see how this team performed in all-star play this summer was building in the early months of 2020 when indoor practices began. And then COVID-19 happened. Like just about everything else, youth sports seasons were put on hold, and it looked like there might be a lot of disappointed 12-year-olds who would not get to enjoy their final year in Little League. The national organization announced on April 30 that there would be no national tournament — including the World Series in Williamsport — this summer. “It was upsetting,” Speciale said. “I wanted to make my last year my best year. But I 18 August 2020 • siparent.com

You’re lucky if you get 100 people at a high school game.” A successful Little League all-star team spends the entire summer with each other and it becomes a family for the kids and their parents. “From Memorial Day to the second week of August, they’re together every day, six nights a week,” James Speciale said. “Going away, staying in hotels, sleepovers, pool parties. We were fortunate to experience that the last two years.” Gano and Christian Speciale have played at Great Kills since T-ball and are good friends. They are always at the complex, playing their own games, practicing and hanging out to watch their friends play. Both were expected to be part of that all-star team this year, Gano a stud pitcher on a staff that James Speciale said would have had “six or seven guys who could pitch, but five legitimate pitchers.” It turned out Little Leagues in the Staten Island district got the OK to begin play in early July, so most of the 12s at least have had the chance to play their final regular season —albeit with masks, social distancing, hand sanitizer in the dugouts and umpires calling balls and strikes from behind the pitcher. “The game is just as good as it was before,” Christian Speciale. His mom, Christina, said he’d love it in any form. “He’s probably the smallest kid out there, but no one has more passion,” she said. And, while everyone concedes it wouldn’t be the same, there is talk of a possible district all-star tournament in the fall. “I hope so,” John said. “At least we’d get some games out of it.” And a chance to extend his last year in Little League a bit further.

EASY, HEALTHY
SUMMER SNACKS
fter four months of quarantining with kids, you probably never want to hear the word “snack” (Using Fewer Than again. We can’t help you there. But we can promise these snacks are all super easy to make, take only a few ingredients and – here’s the kicker – they’re healthy too. Bring on the summer snacks! Frozen Grapes. Wash seedless grapes, then slide them onto skewers and freeze for refreshing burst of flavor. Skip the stick if you want and use in place of ice cubes when relaxing in the backyard. Frozen Bananas. Peel ripe bananas and slice in half horizontally. Insert popsicle sticks at the bottom of each banana and freeze. Eat them as is, or dip in melted chocolate and refreeze for an indulgent snack. Cucumber Hummus Rollups. Using a mandolin or vegetable peeler, make long strips of cucumber. Spread hummus on strips and roll up, securing with a toothpick. Add strips of turkey for an added protein punch. Yogurt Bark. Mix two cups of greek yogurt and two tablespoons of honey (or maple syrup) and the toppings of your choice (berries and chocolate chips are the perfect combo), then line a baking tray and pour the mixture, spreading evenly. Freeze until firm, around 2-3 hours. Cut or break into chunks. So healthy and so good!

Watermelon on a Stick. Could not be more simple than watermelon triangles on popsicles. Couldn’t be more fun, either! It’s the perfect poolside snack. Frozen Yogurt Dots. Um, hello, ONE ingredient yumminess! Simply scoop your favorite yogurt into a plastic sandwich bag, and snip off the corner to turn it into an instant piping bag. Then squeeze out little dots onto a parchmentcovered baking sheet and freeze. Fruit Salad Ice Pops. Salad is way more fun on a stick. Wash and slice your fruit selection– peaches, blueberries,

LIPM kiwis, strawberries and raspberries work well together – into quarter-inch slices, then drop into popsicle molds. Fill molds with apple juice and freeze. Crunchy Apple Chips. Skip the greasy bagged chips you usually pack for the beach. Slice four apples into 1/6 inch rounds (use a mandolin if you have one). Arrange the slices in a single layer on parchment-covered baking sheets. Remove any remaining seeds. Sprinkle lightly with sugar and cinnamon and bake in a 200-degree oven for 90 minutes. Turn slices over and bake for another hour, then turn off the oven and allow them to sit for several hours or overnight. Do not open the oven during this time to allow for maximum crispiness. Watermelon Slushes. Cut a watermelon into chunks and blend in a food processor with the juice of a lime and the zest of half the lime. Transfer the mixture to a shallow container and freeze for two hours. After two hours, gently scrape the top layer with a spoon. Once you get to the unfrozen mixture pop it back in the freezer. Repeat after another two hours. Freeze until solid (around six hours). Scrape with a spoon and serve. S’more Banana Boats. Cut a banana through the peel lengthwise about 1/2 inch deep, leaving 1/2 inch at both ends. Open wider to form a pocket. Fill the inside with marshmallows and chocolate chips. Wrap loosely with heavy
duty aluminum foil. Grill over medium heat for 5-10 minutes or bake in a 400-degree oven for the same amount of time. Open the tin foil, crunch up a graham cracker over the top and dig in at your next backyard campout. Chocolate-filled Raspberries. Rinse raspberries and set aside. Fill a sandwich bag with melted chocolate, snip the corner and pipe chocolate into each raspberry. Flash freeze to set the chocolate and serve for a decadent but simple dessert. Peanut Butter Cheerio Clusters. In a bowl, melt 1/4 cup maple syrup (or honey) and 1/4 cup peanut butter in the microwave for about 30 to 45 seconds, until smooth. Add 3/4 cup Honey Nut Cheerios to the bowl and toss to coat. Dollop spoonfuls of the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Set aside to harden, about 10 minutes.

10 COMMON MISTAKES WHEN APPLYING SUNSCREEN
T
Summer is in full swing. Finding a safe and effective sunscreen for you and your family is a major component of your sun safety toolbox.
he Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, has updated its 2020 Guide to Sunscreens (ewg.org/sunscreen) with 119 new SPF products. The guide includes a comprehensive list of safe sunscreens, including Best Beach and Sport Sunscreens, Best Sunscreens for Kids and Best Lip Balms with SPF. When applying sunscreen, it’s important to read product instructions. When applied incorrectly, it provides far less protection from harmful ultraviolet rays and leaves
skin exposed to sun damage. Here are 10 common mistakes people make when applying sunscreen, according to the EWG. NOT READING THE INGREDIENT LABEL
Some sunscreen ingredients have been linked to health harms and should be avoided. EWG recommends a mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because these active ingredients have fewer health concerns, and these products generally offer good sun protection. Zinc oxide especially provides good broad spectrum protection, protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and stability in the sun. Some commonly used sunscreen
ingredients can do more harm than good. For example, oxybenzone, a sunscreen chemical used in 40 percent of the non-mineral products in the 2020 Sunscreens Guide, is easily absorbed through the skin and is a known skin sensitizer and hormone disruptor, according to a study by the Food and Drug Administration. Another study found that adolescent boys with higher oxybenzone levels in their bodies had significantly lower total testosterone levels. Not only is oxybenzone harmful to human health but it also has negative aquatic impacts and has been shown to cause coral bleaching and coral death. On sun-exposed skin, retinyl palmitate, or vitamin A, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions.

LIPM NOT APPLYING ENOUGH SUNSCREEN
Most people don’t use enough sunscreen. To protect your body fully, you should use about an ounce of lotion – enough to fill a
already hitting your skin. On some days, even five minutes outside in the bright sunlight without sunscreen can damage skin.
RELYING ON SUNSCREEN ALONE
ALTHOUGH SUNSCREEN CAN HELP PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM SUN DAMAGE, IT SHOULD NEVER BE YOUR ONLY LINE OF DEFENSE. PROPER SUN PROTECTION INCLUDES WEARING PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, LIKE A LIGHTWEIGHT, LONG-SLEEVED SHIRT, PANTS, A WIDE-BRIMMED HAT AND SUNGLASSES WITH UV PROTECTION. FIND OR MAKE SHADE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, AND STAY INDOORS DURING PEAK MIDDAY SUN. shot glass. Product testers apply a thick coat of sunscreen to their skin to determine its SPF – the equivalent of a family of four using up a four-ounce bottle in just two hours. Make sure to slather it on! Lotions will coat your skin in the most uniform way. Avoid aerosol sprays. They don’t coat skin evenly and can pose inhalation risks. Remember to apply lotion to your brows, ears, scalp and tops of your feet. And make sure to use a lip balm with SPF as well. FORGETTING TO REAPPLY SUNSCREEN EVERY TWO HOURS
Think one coat of sunscreen lasts all day? Think again. Sunscreens lose effectiveness over time. And high SPF in the product you use is no excuse to prolong your time in the sun. Such products can give people a false sense of security so they think they are completely protected from sunburn and long-term skin damage, and can stay out in the sun longer without reapplying. EWG recommends that consumers avoid products labeled with anything higher than SPF 50+. So, regardless of your product’s SPF rating, reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. APPLYING SUNSCREEN OUTDOORS
Get a head start – apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you venture outside. If you’re already exposed to the sun while applying sunscreen, harmful rays are
You’ll also be less likely to miss a spot if you take the time to apply sunscreen at home. WEARING SUNSCREEN ONLY AT THE BEACH OR POOL
You’re exposed to harmful UV radiation year-round, not just at the beach or pool. Up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate through thick clouds. It’s not unheard of to get a sunburn on an overcast day. In winter months, the sun’s skin-damaging ultraviolet rays reflect off snow and ice, increasing your exposure. This is especially true on ski vacations, with greater UV exposure the higher the altitude. And remember, UV rays can pass through some glass panes while you drive or work by a window. USING AN OLD, SEPARATED OR EXPIRED SUNSCREEN
As sunscreens age, or repeatedly heat and cool (think: home cabinet to poolside, then back again), the formulation can separate or clump in its container. When this happens, the sunscreen won’t coat your skin in the thick or even way that’s necessary for proper skin protection. Shake sunscreens before applying and store them at an even temperature whenever possible. Toss any product if it clumps or if the oil separates from the lotion. Sunscreens are generally formulated
to last about three years. However, it’s important to check expiration dates and examine the product’s texture before use. Discard products after their expiration date because they may no longer provide proper protection. NEGLECTING TO WEAR SUNSCREEN BECAUSE OF YOUR DARKER SKIN TONE
Regardless of your ethnicity or complexion, everyone needs to use sunscreen. No one is immune from the sun’s harmful UV rays. And though melanin increases in response to sun exposure, that tan is a sign of skin damage. Although dark skin tones naturally produce more melanin to protect skin, it’s not enough to prevent skin cancer, wrinkling and photo-aging. USING A PRODUCT THAT COMBINES SUNSCREEN AND BUG REPELLENT
Avoid products that combine insect repellent with sunscreen. Bugs are typically not a problem during the hours when UV radiation peaks. And, more importantly, if you reapply sunscreen every two hours, as advised, you will be overexposed to the active ingredients in the repellent. OVERLOOKING SPF PRODUCTS FORMULATED FOR BABIES
Many baby products are formulated without fragrance and other sensitizing or allergenic ingredients. These products also work well to help protect adults with sensitive skin. For babies and children, sun protection is particularly important, since getting severe sunburns as a child can increase a person’s lifetime chances of developing serious forms of skin cancer. For babies under 6 months, who are not yet protected by melanin, it’s best to keep them out of the sun and to avoid exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when ultraviolet rays are most intense. How One Staten Island MOM Talks to Her Kids About RACE
W
BY NATASHA D’ANNA
Natasha D’Anna, creator of Twindollicious, shares how she talks about race, racism, and current events with her children.
e now have a new historical day in our calendar: May 25, 2020—the day George Floyd was killed by police. The resulting current events are impossible for anyone to ignore. And our children are also watching the events unfold—on every media channel and in every household. So, how do we as parents address this? As a Black woman, I do not have the answers, nor do I know the correct way to handle this situation. I was raised in a home where all my friends were accepted and loved as long as they were good and loved us back. We were warned about bad behavior and making bad choices that would affect our future—but when our parents discussed this, they never included the subject of race. We were kids and were not made to bear the burden of race. Conversations about race only happened when tragedies like George Floyd’s death occurred. Sadly, these types of conversations are still happening. But these conversations with my children began earlier than they did when I was growing up because my husband is White and I am Black. Plus, our children are fraternal twins and are in the 25th percentile of one being a darker shade than the other. While there was no way we could avoid the conversation of race altogether, we didn’t address racism and racial inequality until the twins were in second grade. It was then that they started reading books about oppression, and I didn’t want them to feel badly about their ancestors. When we started having conversations about race, we went beyond the books

and looked at our own family and friends. We spoke about economic differences, inheritance, the American dream, culture, art, education, and lifestyle. These are major topics we continue to discuss when addressing the differences in the way people of color are treated. These days, and as a result of the current events, I am sharing more positive insights on the culture and history of Black people. I include our personal family history. I also talk about oppression in the most child-friendly way, explaining about injustice and underserved communities. I am sharing the good actions being done to make the world a better place to live in for everyone, which starts by standing up for our friends. When we talk about racism, we say it comes from ignorance and that it is a disease. If anyone allows racism and ignorance to affect them for a long period of time, they will become alienated. No one wants to be an alien. This is perhaps the simplest way for a child to remember this lesson. In our house, we entertain our children with Latin music, as well as classical, rhythm and blues, reggae, and Italian music. When we travel with our children, we go beyond the resorts and into the local neighborhoods. We eat the local food and learn the culture. When learning about art, we discuss Peter Max as well as Romero Brito. When we watch television, which isn’t often, we watch The Wiz and The Wizard of Oz. Children learn by experiences and by what they see—more so than what they are told or taught to do. In general, if something feels normal, it will be accepted. Our children have dignity, respect for themselves and others; they treat others as they would like to be treated. And they know how to learn from their own experiences.
“I was raised in a home where all my friends were accepted and loved as long as they were good and loved us back.”

CATHOLIC SCHOOL CLOSURES
The Archdiocese of New York recently announced the closing of 20 Catholic Schools – including three in Staten Island – due to Covid-19. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel/St. Benedicta School, St. Joseph-St. Thomas School, and Sts. Peter-Paul School will not be reopening for the 2020-2021 school year. In a press release, the Archdiocese cited the “devastating financial impact” of the pandemic as the cause for the closings. “Mass unemployment and continuing health concerns have resulted in families’ inability to pay their current tuition, and a significantly low rate of re-registration for the fall; while months of cancelled public masses and fundraising for scholarships have seen a loss of parish contributions which traditionally help support the schools,” it said. Families whose schools are not reopening will be required to submit a new application and register at the new school for the upcoming school year to hold a seat for their child at the new school. For information visit catholicschoolsny.org/announcements.
ADVERTISER DIRECTORY
TRAVELING DURING COVID-19
There’s no question about it; Covid-19 turned our lives upside down this year. Parties were cancelled, school and work went remote, stores shut down, etc. Now that New York is slowly reopening, people are emerging from quarantine and attempting to live as normal a life as possible. Summertime calls for travel, and while many families have cancelled their vacation plans, some are still planning getaways if they can be done safely. If you’re considering a trip this summer, here are some important questions to ask yourself before finalizing plans: • Is Covid-19 spreading where you and your family plan on vacationing? How many cases are there and are they on an incline or decline? • Is Covid-19 rapidly spreading in your own community? • Will you be able to avoid crowds and easily stay at least six feet away from others during your trip? • Are you or anyone you’re traveling with at increased risk for severe complications from Covid-19? • Are you willing to stay home for 14 days after traveling? • Are you and your family willing to wear masks or protective face coverings in public for the duration of your trip? It goes without saying that if you, or any members of your family, are sick or have been around anyone diagnosed with or displaying symptoms of Covid-19 in the past two weeks, you should absolutely not travel (or leave your home at all).
