Teaching Children Generosity Getting & Giving During the Holidays WRITTEN BY: Bright Horizons

“W

hat I found with more affluent families is that they were spending so much time and energy trying to provide the goods, and the good life for their children, they often neglected the effort to bring out the goodness in children.” -Robert Coles, The Moral Intelligence of Children (Random House, 1997)

As parents, it’s natural for us to want to give our children the things we didn’t have. And in today’s world, it’s often easy to confuse the wants of our children with their actual needs. Often we respond to every “I want” because we can and it makes us feel good, not necessarily because we should. Especially during the holidays, many of us tend to give generously to our children even those of us who typically practice moderation. There are an infinite numbers of toys, games, and treats in today’s

8

kiddos | December 2021 • January 2022

world. And no matter how much our children have, they will always want more, and there will always be a friend who has more. How can we change this mindset and raise caring and giving children that know the importance of giving rather than getting? How do we avoid over spoiling our kids during the holidays? Here are some tips on how we can teach our children to moderate their wants, be thankful for what they have, and give to others.

Tips to Minimize Spoiling Your Children during the Holiday Season One way to help children understand the importance of giving and gratitude during the holiday season is to teach them about moderation whenever possible.

• Even though you may be able to afford gifts for children, try not to get in the habit of buying your child something every time you go in a store, even if it is just gum or candy they want.

• When you are shopping and allow your child to buy something, avoid giving your child too many choices. When you go to a store, try letting your child make a selection just from the book aisle or the arts and crafts area.

• Actively teach your children as they mature that media advertising is trying to shape our thinking to want more and more.

• Make quality family time the major holiday goal that children look forward to, even in shopping expeditions. For example, adding breakfast or lunch at a restaurant to your shopping trip can become its own cherished tradition.

• Moderate the shopping goals to the energy and developmental level of your child. Encourage your child to give to a child in need through Toys for Tots or other similar programs, and include that in the shopping goals.

• Encourage grandparents to show some restraint, perhaps giving gifts of time or piggy-bank savings.

• As a family, model restraint and sharing with the less fortunate through local programs to aid the impoverished and homeless here and in other countries. If you don’t have a favorite charitable organization, consider The Bright Horizons Foundation for Children.

The Bright Spaces program creates play spaces for children who live in homeless shelters. Teaching Kids to Give Back during the Holidays “It’s better to give than to receive” is an old adage that we’ve all heard. A study by the American Psychological Association suggests that giving to others increases life expectancy by at least 5 years. A stretch? Maybe. But if you and your child shovel the snow from your elderly neighbor’s sidewalk this winter, you may be doing yourself, your child, and your neighbor a favor. We can start with the

very small and teach our children about giving to others in need. Young children can learn to give back during the holiday season by giving a kind word, offering a smile, sharing a toy, drawing a picture, writing or dictating a note, or comforting a friend or family member. And as they grow, so will their generosity. Here are some additional family giving ideas for helping and giving to others that you can do with your child during the holiday season and at any time of the year:

• Collect clothing or personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless.

• Make favors, scrapbooks, napkin rings, or crafts for a special occasion to donate to a local children’s hospital.

• “Adopt” a senior citizen and help him or her with necessary chores or visit an elder care home.

• Plan or cooperate with existing paper drives or other recycling endeavors.

• Collect food for local food banks. • Make greeting cards for people in a eteran’s hospital or other health care facilities.

• “Adopt” a service person stationed overseas, collect items and send them a gift box.

• Make toys, games, or crafts for a child care center or pediatric unit of a hospital. It’s a lot easier to write about swimming upstream in the material world than living those words. Teaching valuable lessons like the importance of giving and helping others is a difficult task for all parents, so we ought to do what we can and celebrate that, not beat ourselves up because there is so much more that we could be doing. k

Managing Grief During the Holidays Source: FIU’s Center for Children and Families

It is important to remember that even though an individual may be grieving, they can still celebrate and enjoy the holidays.

Acknowledge the Loss Families can find ways to honor their loved one’s physical absence during holiday celebrations by incorporating their spirit into celebrations and holiday traditions. Examples of this could be decorating ornaments in ways that are symbolic of a loved one, cooking their favorite meal or making a memorial donation to a favorite charity.

T

he holidays, as well as birthdays and other celebrations, are often difficult for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, particularly during the first year of adjusting to life without them. The holiday season may result in a renewed sense of grief, especially as wellintentioned individuals are encouraging those who are grieving to participate in traditional festivities. While there can be joy in being together with family and friends, the holidays can also bring feelings of sadness, loss and emptiness. For those who find themselves struggling with grief during the holidays and other celebrations, consider these ideas from Remembering a Life, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association.

10

kiddos | December 2021 • January 2022

Talk About Grief Grief isn’t a linear journey. Ignoring pain and emotions won’t make it go away. Don’t be afraid to talk about grief with others. Confiding in close family and friends can help a grieving person feel heard and understood. Establish Boundaries During the Holidays Friends and family may encourage a grieving person to participate in the holiday just as they normally would. While these intentions are typically good, it is important for the bereaved to set boundaries and focus on what they want. While grieving, one should openly and honestly discuss wishes with friends and family and clarify what they are comfortable with and have the emotional bandwidth to do.

Reflect On and Embrace Fond Memories Memories of a loved one, both from the holidays and other special times, are an important legacy. Rather than ignoring these memories, talk about them with family and friends. It’s OK to laugh and it’s OK to cry. One way to facilitate this activity is with Remembering A Life’s Have the Talk of a Lifetime Conversation Cards, which can help families share stories and memories about loved ones and themselves. It can make for a meaningful activity during holiday gatherings. k

10 Single Parent Christmas Traditions

W

WRITTEN BY: Abby Watts

hen my sons were one and three, we were living with my parents. It was the first Christmas after my divorce and it looked nothing like the Christmases I always imagined. It was easy to feel sorry for myself. The advice I kept hearing was, “Create your own traditions!” But single parent Christmas traditions aren’t all that easy to come by and are even harder to keep up. Even Christmas countdowns are tough. Since my kids are only with me for half of their time, I find myself opening half the Advent calendar doors (and yes, eating the mediocre chocolate) myself. So I’ve brainstormed some ideas to help us all out. Here are 10 Christmas traditions that single parents can totally pull off. 1. Have a camp out under the Christmas tree. As an adult, I’m sure you thought your days of sleeping on the floor were long behind you. But your kids will think it’s so cool to curl up with you in a sleeping bag and fall asleep under the glow of the tree with your favorite christmas songs playing in the background. 2. Hot cocoa and a Christmas light tour is a must-do. Make your cocoa, grab a few thermoses, and pick the neighborhood known for its over-the-top displays. Let the kids make a Christmas playlist for the drive. Take it up a notch with Santa hats and your car will be bursting with Christmas cheer. 3. Read the story of the birth of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Chapter two is the one that will give you all the warm and fuzzy Christmas feelings. So gather ’round and read it on Christmas Eve or anytime the week before the 25th. 4. Let the kids pick out ornaments for each other. Every year, I take my sons to the store and let them pick out an ornament that suits the other. It’s always interesting to see what they choose! I put initials

on the bottom so they can take these when they have their own family. 5. Volunteer or shop for a food bank together. The kids may moan and groan, but they will always be glad after spending some time helping people during the holidays. This could be the most impactful of all the single parent Christmas traditions.

gets your clothes wet. Support your town’s Christmas event and laugh with your kids. 8. Pick out a Christmas story to read together. Christmas is a great time to slow down and just cuddle on the couch with a story. Pick a few great Christmas Stories and read it with a cup of hot chocolate or cider.

6. Do a drug store dash. 9. Have a cookie baking contest. This is a great way to encourage your kids to think of their siblings when you have a limited budget. Give them $10 and allow them to chip in what they can. Then take a trip to the drug store and challenge them to come up with the best and most fitting gift for their brother or sister. If you have several kids, they can draw names. 7. Find your town’s Christmas event. We have a Christmas event in town that is so bad it’s good. I’m talking mannequins dressed like elves, turn of the century carolers, indoor snow that

I’m not a baker, but I always get an itch to bake at Christmas. Get the kids involved and let them each pick out a recipe. Try a few, do a taste test, and crown a winner! Make it an annual contest. 10. Go to church together. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been. Find a church and go. Your kids will love the carols and the reminder of the reason we celebrate Christmas. What are some single parent Christmas traditions you love? k

Why Your Teen Should Replace Screen Time With Green Time Written By: Jill Suttie

A large new study looks at how much exercise and screen time teens get and how it relates to their mental health. about their mental health, noting how frequently they felt emotionally down, irritable, angry, or nervous, and how often they had difficulties falling asleep, dizziness, headaches, stomachaches, and backaches (physical symptoms associated with poor mental health).

R

ecently, the Wall Street Journal ran an article about how Instagram was affecting teen mental health. In particular, some internal studies at Facebook (which owns Instagram) appeared to confirm that when teen girls used the site, they suffered poorer body image and were at increased risk for depression and eating disorders. But is social media use itself at fault for making teen mental health worse? While some studies suggest it is, others paint a more nuanced picture, finding it difficult to pinpoint problems with screen time itself versus other factors sometimes associated with social media use that may reduce teen wellbeing—like cyberbullying or social isolation. Plus, current conclusions are often based on data from a single point in time, which makes it hard to prove that extended screen time actually causes poorer mental health.

16

kiddos | December 2021 • January 2022

Analyses showed that lower amounts of screen time had no effect on teen well-being. Girls who spent less than an hour on screens and boys who spent less than 90 minutes on screens were not negatively impacted by it. But at higher amounts of screen time, their life satisfaction dropped significantly—they were less happy with their lives, and it got worse the more time they spent. If screen time went above 105 minutes per day for boys or 75 minutes per day for girls, their mental health also got worse. Now, findings from an international study on teens add more to this debate and point toward potential guidelines for screen use. Focusing on over 577,000 adolescents from 42 countries across Europe and North America, the study’s results suggest that we might not have to worry about screen time in smaller doses, until it reaches a certain harmful level, and that exercise can play a protective role no matter how much time a teen spends on screens. For the study, researchers used largescale surveys four years apart (in 2006, 2010, and 2014). Teens between 11 and 15 years old reported on how much of their free time they spent regularly on screens, watching TV or YouTube videos, gaming, checking social media, chatting or emailing with friends, and surfing the internet. They also reported how many days a week they exercised, how satisfied they were with their lives, and

According to the lead author, Asaduzzaman Khan of the University of Queensland, Australia, these findings support the earlier guidelines issued by the American Pediatric Society, which suggests that teens not spend more than two hours on screens per day. “If screen time goes beyond about two hours per day, there’s a detrimental relationship with mental health,” he says. On the other hand, he adds, his study also found that teens who got more regular exercise had greater life satisfaction and fewer physical complaints for both genders. Not only that, the effects were largely unrelated to how much time a teen spent on screens, so that if teens exercised more, it could potentially undo the damage to their well-being that went along with even six or eight hours of screen time.

kiddos

fun

Find the seven differences between the two pictures Khan says that this suggests a two-pronged approach to improving teen well-being. “If we want to improve kids’ mental health, we need to target both behaviors—to minimize screen time and maximize physical activity,” says Khan. “If we are targeting just one behavior, then it might be a missed opportunity.” In the study, the greatest life satisfaction was reported by boys who had one to two hours of screen time a day and were active seven days per week, while girls who exercised every day and had less than an hour of screen time fared best—in line with Khan’s suggested fix. But Khan warns parents and others not to be overly concerned by his results…yet. There are limitations to the study, including uncertainty about the effects of different types of screen time on mental well-being. For example, it may be that scrolling through social media has a very different impact on well-being than playing video games, or that girls do better with one type of digital entertainment than boys. Some of his more current research (not yet published) supports this idea, he says, though clearly much more needs to be done before we can know all of the nuances of this. Still, it does suggest that parents might want to encourage their teens to lessen screen time in favor of more exercise if they can. He suggests parents consider employing online tools that can alert teens (or anyone) when they’ve reached a reasonable limit on their screen time—such as after they’ve watched an hour of YouTube videos. Or it’s a good idea, he says, to take planned breaks from all screens from time to time—a sort of “digital detox.” While it makes sense to promote this idea to teens, it may be easier said than done to change a teen’s use of digital media—especially now, when COVID-19 has forced many teens online more than ever. Khan also notes that it’s hard to impose restrictions on teens unless parents are role-modeling good behavior themselves. k

environment, adapting, regenerating and protecting each individual. For humans, skin is our largest organ, making up roughly 16 per cent of our body weight. Guests will make surprising discoveries about how skin is an ecosystem unto itself, see what lives on our skin (hello face mites!) and explore the relationship of this flora and fauna to our health.

F

rom the gleaming coat of a cougar to the tough exterior of a black rhino, it’s easy to see the diversity of skin in the natural world. Skin is what keeps our insides in and the outside out, protecting us from the elements, and showcasing to other animals and people who and what we are. You’re invited to discover the superpowers of skin across an array of organisms and examine the meaning humans have associated with skin color in Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity, a bilingual, multi-sensory exhibition having its East Coast premiere at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami.

Thought-provoking investigations will also encourage guests to dive deeper to explore how evolution has shaped diversity in human skin—and how much we still have yet to uncover about the underlying genetics of skin color. You’ll investigate the layers of meaning humans have associated with skin color throughout history and how our everevolving social and political climate has influenced shifting ideas of race, identity and culture in our modern world. Presented by Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health, Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity features dozens of specimens from world-class research collections to help you explore the shapeshifting, color-changing and adaptable nature of skin as well as the technological innovations it inspires. Fascinating interactives will have you experimenting with your own sensory receptors and discovering how animals like fish can heal more rapidly than others due to their specialized skin cells.

After guests have explored the new exhibition, they’re encouraged to discover animals at Frost Science whose unique skin helps them find food, avoid predators, attract mates and live in some of the toughest places on Earth including roseate spoonbills, snakes, sharks, octopuses and more. k

Solar is the Future and that Future is Now! SOURCE: Florida Solar Partners

is not feeling well and Sunny is worried for his friend. Some very bright people invented a Photo-voltaic Collector to harvest the energy from the sun and power our homes and businesses around the clock. This is when “Phottie” is born. “Phottie” is short for a Photovoltaic Collector (Strong and durable Solar Panels designed to withstand a Category 5 Hurricane). These solar panels will create an additional layer of safety for your roof and home. Moms and Dads, you will be leaving an incredible and courageous legacy for your children by going solar. You can tell them - and mean it - that you did your part. In addition, you will be saving money, and eventually, you will own your system and not have an energy bill.

T

he Solar energy industry is in its infancy compared to the staple energy industry based on fossil fuels and nuclear sources. The push for a greener source of power has prompted consumers to look at other alternatives. Yet the lack of available knowledge of how solar energy works keeps the Florida market at a lower rate of installations compared to other highly populated states. Florida Solar Partners is a renewable energy consulting firm focused on providing education on the economic and environmental benefits of implementing solar energy into homes and businesses. The environment needs our help and collectively, we all need to do our part, as it is no longer someone else’s problem. It is OUR problem. Our children are our most valuable possession. If we are not doing our part in protecting our environment, we are destroying it for them and some of the damage may be irreparable. Our children will suffer the consequences of our inaction.
