When school is out, teens can keep their learning going by taking on a summer job. For many adolescents,a summer job sets the stage for the rest of their professional life as they discover early on where their strengths lie in the workplace.

In Connecticut, teens can begin working as early as 14 years old, but require working papers until they are 18. During non-school weeks, such as summer break, those between the ages of 16 and 17 are permitted to work eight hours per day, and up to 48 hours per week. Additionally, teens 16 and older may be employed in a restaurant or public dining room.
One advantage of working a summer job is it can serve as a trial run for your teen if they’re unsure about pursuing a certain career path in the future. Be it business, education, the arts, sciences, or hospitality, there are plenty of places in CT that are looking to hire young people and set them on a path to success.
Many museums in CT offer the opportunity for youths to volunteer This can be especially useful for a child who is interested in the arts, sciences, or history (depending on the museum), giving them the chance to flex their knowledge in a tangible way. While completing tasks for administrators or leading patrons through the museum’s curated halls, your teen will develop invaluable skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The obvious choice for a summer job, summer camps serve as a home away from home where children can find their second family. With camaraderie and fun at the forefront at these institutions, teens and tweens have the opportunity to act as role models while working as a counselor or counselor-in-training, respectively Oftentimes camps include specialty classes on the daily schedule, giving campers a chance to engage in arts & crafts, athletics, and other activities. If your child has a vested interest in one of those, they may be best suited to serve as a class instructor. Speaking from experience, there is truly nothing like working at a country club during the summer months. Since Connecticut is a popular destination this time of year, it’s likely local country clubs will need some extra help to attend to all the members who are boating, golfing, and celebrating on the shoreline. Gaining experience on the water, on the floor of a

National Computer Camp (NCC) has been America’s original computer camp since 1977 NCC is held at Fairfield University, and focuses on coding, game design, Minecraft, app programming, and web page design.
NCC offers beginner to advanced programming in Java, C++, Python, assembler, Open-GL, and Javascript. To learn more about the curriculum, visit www.nccamp.com/curriculum. An optional recreation program is also available
NCC is not a summer school, but rather a place where learning and fun are rolled into one. Scholarships are available but funds are limited, so apply early. Scouts can even earn merit badges for their participation in our curriculum.
Our focuses are coding, 2D- and 3D-video game design, Android App programming, cryptography, digital video production, web page design, and software applications including networking, animation, Adobe Flash, and graphics. We offer all levels of programming in Python, Basic, C++, Java, Assembler,
HTML, XML, OpenGL, and JavaScript. Additional activities include Arduino computer lab, 3D printing, robotics, chess, and launching/flying drones.
What distinguishes NCC from other computer camps is that we aim to teach youngsters ages 6-18 lifelong computer skills by providing a solid foundation in programming that focuses on computer languages, 2D and 3D game design, applications, and digital video editing. NCC is not a summer school, but rather a place where learning and fun are rolled into one, and where the campers’ self-esteem is of foremost importance.

Our small groups allow students to receive individual attention from the instructor in a warm, family-like atmosphere. We offer four, one-week sessions with half-day and full-day options. Every class will have an experienced practicing artist, and some studios will also have an assistant to help students learn basic skills in various crafts.
Classes are offered in Blacksmith Basics and Advanced Skills, Digital Arts, Photography, Pottery, Glass Arts, Woodturning, Jewelry Making, Painting & Drawing, Nature Printmaking, and many more. Sessions are offered the weeks of June 24-28, July 8-12, July 22-26, and Aug. 5-9.
Each morning session is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and each afternoon session is from 1-4 p.m. A lunch session is available for children staying on campus between the morning and afternoon sessions. Registration is required for the lunch session and students bring their own lunch.

The Brookfield Craft Center was founded in 1952 and is recognized as one of the core fine craft schools in America. Camp Wachusett for Boys, established in 1903, is a small overnight camp located on beautiful Lake Hortonia near Brandon, Vt. Wachusett provides the perfect setting for boys ages 8-15 to escape the tether of electronic devices and learn to indulge in outdoor activities and face-to-face socializing.
Our motto, “Unaliyi,” a Cherokee word meaning “a place of friends,” personifies our community, where new and returning campers make strong and lasting friendships Boys choose from a selection of activities that promote multiple levels of interaction with peers, and the opportunity for personal growth.

Counselors and returning campers have developed strong friendships, and look at Wachusett as a home away from home. We also have an experienced nurse who can administer any medications, and readily contact parents if there are any issues of concern
In addition to offering adventurous overnight camping trips and fun field trips, our small size allows flexibility for unique experiences like caring for chickens, cows, and a vegetable garden where fresh eggs and home-grown vegetables are integrated into the dining experience.

The Day Camp at Eisner is located on the grounds of URJ Eisner Camp in Great Barrington, in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts. Our day camp has its own building and spacious enclosed playground with plenty of room for games, exercise, exploration and fun.
Additionally, our Day Campers spend much of the day around camp enjoying the facilities of our overnight camp: two heated swimming pools, numerous athletic fields, tennis courts, an indoor theater, an arts & crafts center, Teva (nature program), gardens, an animal farm, an indoor sports center, and the lake. Eisner Day Camp is an accredited camp of the American Camping Association.
Our youngest campers are 4 years old (by July 1, 2024), and our oldest campers are rising second graders whose families live year-round or seasonally in the southern Berkshire region of Massachusetts and New York. Transportation to and from camp is available at an additional cost for families from Crane Lake Camp. Transportation is first-come, first-serve, and available to five campers maximum.

he Greenwich Racquet Club offers both a tennis sports camp and a tennis-only camp. The tennis sports camp is primarily tennis, but also includes indoor soccer and basketball.

Knowing the right age to send your child off to sleepaway camp is a question that is asked of camp directors every day Rhino Merrick, director of Camp Sloane YMCA in Lakeville, Conn., offered advice to parents who are wrangling with the idea of their child’s first sleepaway experience.
“Really, there are two important and simple steps for parents,” Merrick said. “First is to chat with your child about camp When the camper is excited about the idea of going away to camp, that will be a good indicator that they’re ready.”
The next step is critical, according to Merrick, a longtime camp director. “You need to find a camp that matches your families’ values,” he said.
Merrick suggests speaking to camp directors and asking about their camp’s philosophy, what their licensing and accreditation status is, and how many campers and staff the camp has.

Li’l Place (Pre-K program)
Li’l Place is a program for preschoolers who will be 4 years old by the end of the calendar year. Campers are introduced to literature, arts and crafts, music, nature, and play through theme-related activities. From morning circle time and show-and-tell to active time on the playscape and bike rides, the days are filled with challenge and fun!
Kinderplace (Kindergarten program)
Kinderplace is a program for children who will enter kindergarten in the fall. The curriculum emphasizes socialization and interaction through creative combinations of play and learning. Theme-related activities in art, literature, math, music, and science are balanced with “center” time, stories, snacks, and outdoor play Daily Red Cross swimming lessons included.
Summer Place (1st-9th graders)
From outdoor adventures to indoor creativity and academic exploration, Summer Place has it all. Campers follow a daily schedule that includes a half-day of enrichment courses and a half-day of sports or recreational activities. At Summer Place, campers get to choose from over 80 enrichment classes and 20 sports activities to build their own schedules based on their interests and grade level. F orman School will host its Summer Program, a coed boarding and day camp, on its Litchfield, Conn., campus from July 1-26. The program is a balance of academics and recreation for students with learning differences who are entering grades 7-11.
Guided by a team of expert faculty and staff, students discover their unique learning styles while being inspired, challenged, and empowered They develop effective and tactical classroom and study strategies, learn self-advocacy, and gain lasting confidence in their abilities.
Students take three classes each morning and learn in a tight-knit class setting. Classes, which average six students, include metacognitive strategies, executive function skills, math comprehension, reading, writing, and SAT/ACT preparation. Teachers build on students’ individual strengths and address key challenges, leveraging best-in-class learning strategies and assistive technologies.
“One of the main goals of Forman’s Summer Program is to help students develop a love for learning in subjects like math, reading, and executive functioning,” Program Dean of Academics Brittany Bloom said.
Students deepen their passions in the afternoons by participating in two to four activities of their choice daily, including golf, tennis, soccer, swimming, ceramics, and rock climbing.
Evenings are enriched with community events that nurture personal growth, a positive mindset, and interpersonal skills. Weekends include on- and off-campus activities, from sports to arts and team building. Students enjoy the natural beauty of summer in northwest Connecticut, and explore all the local area has to offer.

The summer art camp experience at Guilford Art Center is geared towards developing each child’s creative expression, artistic skills, and social interaction through hands-on activities.
Registration opens online at www. guilfordartcenter.org on March 27 for weekly programs that run from June 17 through Aug. 23 for kids ages 5-12. Kids can attend morning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) or afternoon sessions (1-4 p.m.) or attend for the full day with bridge care in between. Sign up for one weekly session or multiple sessions throughout the summer.
Experienced instructors manage all classes with the help of assistants to provide each child with caring guidance and inspiration. Classes
cover a range of mediums and themes, including ceramics, painting, drawing, metalworking, cartoon illustration, mixed media, paper art, nature art, and more
There are also workshops and classes available for tweens and teens. Teen classes include blacksmithing, stained glass, and leather working. All classes will be posted on the GAC website in March with full descriptions and pricing information. Financial aid is also available.

Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp is a summer camp with a history that dates back to 1954. Located on 270 acres of pristine woodlands and scenic ponds in Pomfret, Conn., Windham-Tolland 4-H offers a summer experience rich in fun, friendship, learning, and adventure.
We offer resident/overnight camp and day camp for boys and girls ages 6-15. Teens interested in expanding their leadership and community service experience can sign up for our Teen Leader Program
Summer 2024 runs June 23 through Aug. 16. Our sessions are one week in length starting on Sundays
and ending on Fridays. It may be cold in February, but there is no hibernation going on at the Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp.
It is never too early to think about summer, and a great way to do that is to join us at our Open Houses on Feb. 18 from 1-3 p.m., March 24 from 1-3 p.m., and April 20 from 12-4 p.m. Take a tour, meet some of the staff, and register for camp while you are here.
