Arup will be at WUF12 in Cairo next week and we’re inspired by this year’s theme ‘It All Starts at Home’, focusing on localizing the Sustainable Development Goals. Did you know that WUF is now the largest UN event after the climate COP? Our team of experienced city practitioners will be speaking on or facilitating discussion of a wide range of topics, which will bridge the four pillars of WUF12: Local; Together; Now; and Home. See our full programme and we hope to see many of you there or online. https://lnkd.in/e37p5VmA Dima Zogheib Jose Ahumada Sara Candiracci Alice Charles Sowmya Parthasarathy Henry Harris #WeAreArup #WUF12 #ItAllStartsAtHome #ItAllStartsLocally #ItAllStartsTogether #ItAllStartsNow

In the future a city’s ability to remain competitive will depend not just on traditional measures of competitiveness but also on its ability to withstand shocks and stresses. It needs to be resilient. Resilient cities can better withstand and recover from natural disasters, and by preparing for and mitigating risks, cities can maintain economic stability even during crises. This means ensuring that essential services such as healthcare, water and electricity remain available during emergencies. Without climate resilience, cities will not be able to protect their citizens or their critical infrastructure from extreme weather events, which are growing in frequency and intensity, and the damage they cause. #ArupChina40 We are one of the first foreign engineering consultants that started business in Central and West China. From infrastructure to urban complexes, we have reshaped the region’s urban fabric. Raffles City Chongqing, the world’s tallest horizontal skyscraper, stands as a shining example of our impact. This super-scale development features eight towers including two 350m tall super slender towers and a 300m long glass-clad conservatory atop four high-rise towers. Inspired by historic Chinese sailing vessels, the design honours Chongqing’s trading legacy. Our innovative structural solution, a tailored hybrid outrigger system, ensures resilience and flexibility against winds and seismic activity. Our multidisciplinary services to the project included structural, geotechnics, bridge, fire, wind, seismic and sustainable design. This World Cities Day, we join with others around the world to recognise the contribution of youth in leading climate and local action for cities. Each year, our cohorts of interns, apprentices and graduate trainees join us on our mission to shape a better world and their ideas, hopes and dreams help us envision the future we help to build. While they stand on the shoulders of giants, they are the foundations of the sustainable future we are working towards. #WorldCitiesDay #WeAreArup

As climate change intensifies, those overseeing critical infrastructure projects face a unique challenge: how to strategically allocate funding while accounting for present and future risks. Our Advisory team recently delivered a set of guidelines for the Colombia Ministry of Finance that identify and assess environmental, social, governance, and resilience (ESG+R) risks for public-private (P3) infrastructure projects. The ESG+R guidelines, grounded in case studies, consider crucial factors such as biodiversity, cultural heritage, and climate change. The guidelines equip Colombia’s government with insights needed to sustainably deliver future P3 infrastructure projects. Building off this work, we have recently been named ESG Advisor of the Year as part of the 2024 P3 Awards. This year we’re celebrating 40 years in Mainland China. It’s been a remarkable four decades for Arup and we’re proud of our contribution to many diverse projects in the territory, from engineering marvels like the Bird’s Nest, the CCTV headquarters and CITIC Tower to mega infrastructures such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and transformative developments like Qianhai. We’ve also been working closely with our clients, widening our scope of buildings decarbonisation services, to help them reduce their energy consumption and meet emissions targets. I’m looking back at our first project in China, Shanghai's first five-star hotel, Jing'an Hilton, designed and constructed in 1984. There were many challenges from extreme weather and difficult topography to working with new design standards and political systems, but the result was a landmark that dominated the Shanghai skyline and was regarded as one of the most successful hotel developments in China at the time. We look forward to our continued commitment to cutting-edge design, planning, engineering and advisory services, and spearheading sustainable urban development across China for the next 40 years! Here’s an early image of Jing'an Hilton in Shanghai (left) and a recent picture of CCTV Headquarters alongside China’s tallest building, CITIC Tower in Beijing (right). #WeAreArup #MainlandChina #Decarbonisation

As the first gene bank in the world to receive #LEED Platinum v4 certification, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture’s (CIAT) new Palmira campus in Colombia includes numerous facilities, including Future Seeds. A sustainably designed gene bank, Future Seeds serves as both a global repository for preserving crop diversity and an innovation lab for improving human nutrition. We worked closely with CIAT and Alejandro Echeverri + Valencia Arquitectos to achieve a design that would be flexible and sustainable, delivering a state-of-the-art, net zero, and high performing building. From the breathable canopy and modular laboratories to a learning center open to the public, the sustainable design of Future Seeds is paving the way for climate-proof global food systems. How can fly larvae help to resolve the developing world’s waste management challenges? In 2021, The Sanergy Collaborative was selected as an Earthshot Prize finalist for its innovative approach to using fly larvae to convert waste into organic fertiliser. We supported Sanergy by conducting computational fluid dynamics analysis and building a baseline model, which helped the organisation to construct a first-of-its-kind organic recycling facility in Nairobi, Kenya. Our work helped Sanergy to optimise its operational conditions and will support its expansion to other sites in Kenya and beyond. Since becoming an Earthshot Prize finalist, Sanergy’s solutions have saved over 27,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions, while helping to safely remove waste from slums, markets, and agricultural pack houses. The Earthshot Prize is a global prize designed to identify, spotlight and scale groundbreaking solutions to the world’s greatest environmental issues. As Africa's first city to pursue a 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) approach, eThekwini Municipality is working toward a future where every kilowatt of municipal energy is carbon-free. We’re excited to be involved in this effort, commissioned by C40 Cities and with support from Energy Unlocked, to advise on strategies for decarbonising city facilities. Our team mapped out a variety of impactful solutions - such as installing solar panels, developing biogas plants, and incorporating battery storage—to cut emissions and secure a more resilient energy supply. By 2030, these efforts could lead to a 42% drop in eThekwini’s reliance on Eskom’s imported electricity, creating stronger energy independence and wider access to clean energy for residents.
