As I sit here freezing my tiny fingers off in the draught of an open window (‘cos, fresh air), but with a heater at my feet, thinking about taking a hot shower to help restore my body temperature to some kind of equilibrium, I’ve come to the conclusion we’re asking far too much of our skin.
Hot. Cold. Wind-whipped. Stop flaking. Stay hydrated. Keep an even skin tone.
It’s not so mad to think our moisturisers can barely keep up. Which begs the question, should we be doubling down on this skincare step during the cooler months?
What is Double Moisturising?
Moisturising, and moisturising again.
This method was apparently pioneered by the beauty-obsessed in Japan. Or so TikTok tells me. But we’ve incorporated double cleansing with no fuss, and got around double shampooing just as smoothly. Why not follow suit with, arguably, the most nourishing step in your skincare routine?
Note! We’re referring to moisturising as a verb. (Not moisturiser, the product.) The act of adding moisture to the skin. And this can come in many forms - serums, oils, creams.
A Double Moisturising how-to:
It involves the application of two different types of moisturisers:
- A humectant - they attract water to the skin, and prevent dehydration.
- And an occlusive - they seal in all the moisture, and stop any evaporation in the skin.
The first layer (your hyaluronic acid, glycerin etc) is supposed to be quick-absorbing, and act as the primary layer of hydration. The second layer (your shea butter, squalane, lanolin etc) is more of a slow-release source of hydration, providing a protective barrier on top to prevent evaporation.
Which skin types benefit from Double Moisturising?
Double Moisturising can be beneficial for all skin types. But it is a real face-by-face basis.
For mature, dry skin especially, this is a fabulous way to replenish the skin year-round. It will help prevent thirsty patches appearing, and instead, maintain a super plump and glowy complexion.
Here’s one very effective and hardworking Double Moisturising combo we prepared earlier.
Hyaluronic Acid Serum What is it? A hydrating serum packed with peptides, provitamin B5 and four types of hyaluronic acid to expertly quench and plump your skin. Designed to deeply replenish even extremely dry or dehydrated skin, Much Plumper Skin boosts and seals in moisture levels, giving bouncy, radiant skin. Daily Moisturiser Very Useful Face Cream is a hydrating daily moisturiser that defends your skin against premature ageing, and smells pretty alright too.Much Plumper Skin
Very Useful Face Cream
We’re a fan of applying a hyaluronic serum, then following with a rich face cream. Obviously. But any humectant-meets-occlusive mix will work wonders.
So keep an eye on those key ingredients and we’ll see you sans dullness very soon.
