Partnerships
Since our inception, we have engaged with the international Internet community in order to share best practices and expertise on the Domain Name System (DNS). Our partnerships include:
The Council for European National Top Level Domain Registries
CENTR is the not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the interests of the European country code top level domain managers (cc TLD managers). CENTR participates in the development of high standards and best practices and promotes these among ccTLD registries.
We actively participate in CENTR General Assemblies and workshops.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
ICANN coordinates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions, which are the key technical services critical to the continued operations of the internet's underlying address book, the DNS. ICANN develops consensus-driven policies for the advance of a stable and secure Internet.
We have actively participated in the ICANN meetings since 2006, having entered into a registry agreement with ICANN for the management of our three TLDs: .eu (2005), .ею (2016) and .ευ (2019).
We hosted the 38th ICANN meeting in Brussels in June 2010, which was a tremendous success.
EURid has been a member of the country code Name Supporting Organisation (ccNSO) since 2009 and has actively participated in the working groups on the ccTLD Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) Policy Development Process, and the Study Group on Use of Country and Territory names.
In Q1 2015, EURid entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICANN to support DNS trainings and best practices in the Middle East, as a result of which we regularly conduct trainings for representatives of the Middle-Eastern community and have supported seminars on registry business at the DNS Support Center in Cairo.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation
UNESCO supports cultural diversity, scientific and political development and cooperation, and freedom of expression.
Both EURid and UNESCO are carrying out common projects to contribute to the promotion of multilingualism in cyberspace, with special focus on research into and analysis of the deployment of International Domain Names (IDNs), preparation of the joint World Report(s) on IDN deployment, cooperation in preparation of joint events, meetings and projects involving experts from various professional and academic communities, industry as well as other international, regional and national organisations. We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNESCO in early 2013.
Since 2017, the EURid-UNESCO IDN World Report is available online at www.idnworldreport.eu.
The United Nations Internet Governance Forum
The IGF brings people together from various stakeholder groups to discuss public policy issues relating to the internet. The IGF is an open forum and is convened annually under a mandate from the United Nations.
Since 2011 we have hosted workshops on Internationalised Domain Names in partnership with UNESCO. In 2017 we hosted a workshop on how the DNS industry can contribute to a better environment.
The European Dialogue on Internet Governance
The European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) is an open multi-stakeholder platform to exchange views about the Internet and how it is governed. Created in 2008 by several organisations, government representatives and experts, it fosters dialogue and collaboration with the Internet community on public policy for the Internet.
EURid has been supporting EuroDIG with a voluntary financial contribution and hosted the EuroDIG meeting in Brussels in 2016.
The European Summer School on Internet Governance
The Euro-SSIG was launched as a result of the efforts of academics and experts from the UN who recognised a lack of academic research and teaching on Internet Governance. The Euro-SSIG helps interested students and academics, as well as individuals working in the private sector or in government, to better understand global internet governance and to gain a comprehensive and structured knowledge on its various aspects.
We have supported the school project since its inception in 2007.
The Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre
RIPE NCC is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation that supports the infrastructure of the Internet through technical coordination. RIPE provides a collaborative forum open to all parties interested in wide area Internet Protocol (IP) networks in Europe and beyond.
Representatives from our technical team regularly attend RIPE's meetings across Europe, participating in working groups that discuss the core technical infrastructure of the internet and present our technical and infrastructural developments.
The European Union Intellectual Property Office
EUIPO is the European Union Intellectual Property Office responsible for managing the EU trade mark and the registered Community design. EUIPO is dedicated to offering creators and innovators an easy, universal and secure registration experience at national and EU level.
On 23 June 2016, we signed a letter of collaboration and joined forces in raising awareness of trademarks and domain names. As part of our collaborative efforts, we expanded our services to the holders of a European Union trade mark (EUTM) in May 2019. Holders and applicants of an EUTM can opt-in to receive alerts as soon as a .eu domain name is registered that is identical to their EUTM or EUTM application. By receiving this alert, EUTM holders are informed much faster and may take appropriate action much sooner.
