From Middle Dutch gemelijc, ghemelijc, a derivative of Middle Dutch gāme (“joke, prank”), from Old Dutch *gamen, *gaman, from Proto-West Germanic *gaman, from Proto-Germanic *gamaną. Cognate with English game.
