Etymology

[edit]

Alteration of older bagħdam, probably from *bugħ(a)dam, from bu +‎ għadam, literally the one with the bones, probably referring to its pellet. Għadam is here an obsolete plural from Arabic عِظام (ʕiẓām), which explains the final stress.
