Blend of Hispano-Proto-Celtic *agranio (“sloe”) (compare Aragonese arañon, Catalan aranyó) and Late Latin rodandarum, lorandrum, variants of Latin rhododendron, from Ancient Greek ῥοδόδενδρον (rhodódendron), from ῥόδον (rhódon, “rose”) + δένδρον (déndron, “tree”).
