Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *ɢʷi) : semantic (thread) + phonetic (OC *tjul).

The original pronunciation of (OC *ɢʷi) was lost after the classical period, but can still be seen in other characters of the phonetic series:

  • (OC *ɢʷi, “to think”),
  • (OC *ɢʷi, *ɢʷiʔ, “only”),
  • (OC *sqʰʷi, “although”),
  • (OC *ɢʷril, “curtain, screen”) and
  • (OC *ɡʷriːl, “Huai River”).
