From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Balto-Slavic *mirtis, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *mértis, from *mer- (to die). Cognate to Latin (deprecated template usage) mors, mortis, Sanskrit (deprecated template usage) मृत्यु (mṛtyú).
