From a {{syncopic form|tl|nocap=1}} of {{m|tl|ayawan}}, from Proto-Central-Philippine ''*áyaw'' (“to leave (behind)”) + ''-an'', with semantic shift originally meaning “it leaves (me)” according to Zorc (1983).
