In oracle bone script, {{Han compound|ls=ic|nocap=y|皀|夊|t1=food vessel|t2=downward foot}} – to leave the table after eating. Variants that depicted the vessel as {{zh-l|*酉}} or {{zh-l|*豆}} were common. Bronze inscriptions added {{zh-l|*彳}} to emphasize the action of walking away.

In the modern form the vessel {{zh-l|*皀}} has simplified to the unrelated {{zh-l|*艮}}, similar to {{zh-l|*⾷}}, {{zh-l|*即}}, {{zh-l|*既}}, {{zh-l|*郷}}.

{{w|Shuowen}} misinterprets the seal script form as {{Han compound|辵|alt1=彳|t1=move|夊|t2=walk|日|t3=sun|ls=ic|nocap=y}} – to walk away from the sun, to retreat.
