1. A person should be arise on friday early to prepare for Shabbat; even if he has many servants to serve him he should find something small to do, for the honor (of Shabbat). We see this with Rav Chisda who would cut vegetables finely; Rabah and Rav Yosef, who would chop wood; Rabbi Zeira who would light the flame; And Rav Nachman, who would clean the house and replace the weekday cutlery with cutlery designated for Shabbat. We can emulate these people and one should not say: "It is unbecoming of me," for this is the honor of Shabbat. RAMA: Additionally one should sharpen his knife to ease eating on Erev Shabbat for this honors the Shabbat and helps him eat (Kol Bo; Beis Yosef in the name of Sefer Chayei Olam)

250: Preparation for the Meal for Shabbat.

1 One should arise early in the morning on Friday to prepare the needs of Shabbat. And even if he has several servants to serve him, he should try to prepare something by himself for the needs of Shabbat, in order to honor it; for Rav Chisda would cut the vegetable finely; and Rabah and Rav Yosef would chop wood; and Rabbi Zeira would light the fire; and Rav Nachman would improve the house and bring in the cutlery needed for Shabbat and clear out the weekday cutlery. And from them every person should learn and one should not say: "I will not lessen my honor," for this is his honor – that he honors the Shabbat.

Gloss: And one should sharpen the knife on Erev Shabbat for this is from the honor of the Shabbat – that he prepares himself for eating (Kol Bo; and Beis Yosef in the name of Sefer Chayei Olam).

2 One should have more meat and wine and treats, according to his ability.
