Ooops! In this discussion I forgot to do my usual note about the backlinks, so that I could set my bot (BHGbot 4) to replace them with links to portals which still exist. There are quite a lot of links: 1,709 from articles, and 17 from categories.

In this case the potential alternatives seem to me to be the six portals which were linked from Portal:Lighthouses/Related portals:

The obvious replacement would have been Portal:Nautical. However it is up for deletion at WP:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Nautical, and it is in such terrible state that I can't see any chance of it surviving.

I don't see any single standout choice among the other five portals. If I had to pick just one, I think that Portal:Infrastructure would be marginally the best fit, but I'd not be fussed much there was a preference for something else. The bot can handle any number of replacement portals, so if editors prefer to replace links to Portal:Lighthouses with links to all 6 portals listed above, that presents no technical problem. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:05, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the two previous editors that Portal:Infrastructure is the best candidate. If it is nominated for deletion also, then and only then we can consider Portal:Engineering or Portal:Technology. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:40, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that note, @Mark Schierbecker. I don't want to prejudge the outcome of WP:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Infrastructure, because it isn't as completely abysmal as Portal:Nautical. So how about replacing links to Portal:Lighthouses with links to Portal:Infrastructure + Robert McClenon's suggestion of Portal:Engineering? that way if P:Infrastructure goes, there will still be some link to portal-space on those articles. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:29, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
