In reviews, the book was called a "gripping ... emotion-packed must-read,"[1] "a painfully compelling gem from a masterful creator,"[2] and a "[m]oving, unsettling, and full of atmospheric beauty."[4]

The audiobook received a starred review from School Library Journal,[6] as well as a positive review from Booklist.[7]
