Tennessee secedes

[edit]

In the "Civil War" section, this little line jumped out at me:

"This helped push Tennessee to become the second to last state to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy."

I could have sworn that Tennessee was the final state to secede. In my history class for this year (which focuses on Tennessee history), they keep mentioning how Tennessee was "the last to leave the Union and the first to rejoin the Union". So who's right? --Kaoskastle (talk) 13:28, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tennessee aligned itself militarily with the Confederacy on May 7, 1861. North Carolina seceded on May 20, 1861. However, Tennessee's secession wasn't official until the vote on the Ordinance of Secession on June 8, 1861. Thus the confusion. If June 8 is considered the date when Tennessee left the Union, then Tennessee was the last state to secede. Bms4880 (talk) 23:45, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
