Elijah Daniel (born January 9, 1994) is an American performance artist, actor, comedian and author.[4] Daniel is the author of the erotic novel Trump Temptations, which went viral,[5][6][7] becoming an Amazon Best-Seller within 12 hours of its initial publication.[4][8] According to The Washington Post, the book became a Number-One-Best-Seller on Amazon one week after being published.[9] His book received favorable coverage from The Washington Post,[9] Los Angeles Times,[6] GQ magazine,[10] New York Daily News,[11] and VICE.[7]
With his comedy collaborator Christine Sydelko, Daniel was nominated for the category of "Best Comedian" by the Shorty Awards.[2] After successfully making it to the group of finalists in the category,[3] Daniel and Sydelko won the award from the Shorty Awards in 2017.[1] Heavy.com characterized Daniel as a "YouTube star".[12] Paper Magazine referred to Daniel as the "Los Angeles content king".[4] The Washington Post called him "a social media star".[9]
Early life
After his grandmother became ill, Daniel decided he would take care of her.[4] He moved into his grandmother's residence in order to provide for her homecare needs throughout the day.[4] Daniel began to write comedy to occupy himself during this time.[4] He publicized his comedy work through humorous quips to Twitter,[4] and videos to Vine.[13] By 2016, his Twitter following had grown to over 95,000 fans.[9][14][15]
Career
In 2013 Elijah created an official White House We the People petition as a prank, in order to make Miley Cyrus's "Party in the U.S.A." the national anthem of the United States.[13][16][17] This petition received over 2 million signatures.[17] Starting in 2014 Elijah began hosting a weekly internet prank with CollegeHumor called Text Prank Thursday, where he would have his Twitter followers text random phone numbers saying whatever he told them to say.[18][19]
In 2016 Daniel stated in Twitter that he was going to get drunk, write and self-publish an erotic novel starring, Donald Trump, in one day.[8][9][20] He asked for a protagonist and was given a hotel bell hop from a Twitter poll.[21][22][14] Daniel wrote the work in the style of Fifty Shades of Grey, as a parody of the book.[21][22][23] Within four hours, Daniel had released the twenty-page novella titled Trump Temptations: The Billionaire & The Bellboy on Amazon.[21][24][25] The author planned the work to eventually be part of a three-book trilogy.[25] The work was Daniel's debut novel.[26] Donald Trump subsequently blocked Daniel's account on Twitter.[6][27][23] The book became popular, reaching the number two position on Amazon in the subject of humorous erotica.[21][5] It received critical appreciation on Amazon itself, with a five-star-review-rating the week of its publication.[28][29][15] It reached the number one spot on Amazon in the three separate categories of "Gay Erotica" and "Humorous Erotica" and "LGBT erotica books".[30][31][32] 12 hours after its release, the book was an Amazon Best-Seller.[4] Daniel hired a Trump impersonator, Chris Ferretti, to read the audiobook version of Trump Temptations.[9][33][34] According to The Washington Post, the book became a Number-One-Best-Seller within one week after being published.[9] The book received significant press, and was featured in The Washington Post,[9] New York Daily News,[11] Los Angeles Times,[6] and VICE.[7] The Guardian placed the work within the genre of Donald Trump satire that had cropped up during his 2016 campaign.[35] GQ magazine characterized Daniel's book as "powerful, sexy, and brilliant."[10] Gay Star News called Daniel's work, "a hilarious take on the world of Kindle smut fiction".[36] Fortune magazine observed, "Elijah Daniel has already shown an almost Trumpian ability to exploit an opening in the marketplace."[37] The publishing website, Wattpad, received one million readers as a result of traffic from Daniel's book.[38][39][40] In May 2016, Daniel negotiated a deal regarding the rights to turn his erotic novel into a feature film.[38][39][40] The film studio NakedSword began to work with Daniel in 2016 to adapt the book into a film.[38][40][41] NakedSword stated they were interested in the film project due to the absurd nature of the book's plot.[38][39][40] The book inspired dramatic readings and musical theater style songs based on its contents.[13]
In a 2016 interview with Paper Magazine, Daniel characterized the body of his work as performance art.[4] Based off the press of his book Trump Temptations, Daniel was able to sell two television shows.[9][30][42] In conjunction with television production firm PRØHBTD, Daniel was given roles of star, producer, and creator of the two series.[4] These included one docu-series titled Elijah Daniel is Insane, and one scripted comedy titled Social co-starring Vine comedian Christine Sydelko.[9][4] With Sydelko, Daniel became known for a video series posted regularly to YouTube titled Elijah & Christine.[43] Daniel celebrated his literary success from his book, by live streaming himself getting a tattoo critical of Trump.[39][44][45] After planning to throw a dildo at Donald Trump during a rally in Nevada, Daniel was stopped in his efforts by the United States Secret Service and briefly detained and questioned.[44][46][47] In October 2016, FOTV Media Networks Inc. announced a business partnership with Daniel and Sydelko to produce a full season of their live experimental television show Trash, Talking.[48][49]
Daniel and Sydelko attended the convention Drag Con in April 2017 hosted by Ru Paul, where they appeared on a panel discussion advising how to improve one's brand on social media.[50] In May 2017 Daniel and Sydelko released a song titled "Shooketh" after a mini-skit performed by the duo in a previous video.[51][52][43] When referring to Daniel and Sydelko, Hollywood Life characterized them as "AKA the people behind 'shooketh'".[43]
Personal life
After receiving homophobic death threats against his life via direct message on Twitter, Daniel messaged the parents of the Internet troll about the incident.[53][54] Daniel's calm response to the harassment was praised by Metro News and Elite Daily.[53][54]
After the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, Daniel was moved by the incident to appeal to any individuals who are closeted to contact him privately for support.[55] Daniel also wrote An open letter to the LGBT kids who feel lost and scared on Fusion.net.[55][56] Tricia Tongco of ATTN: praised his writing as a "powerful response" to the attack.[55]
Reception
Writing for Heavy.com, Effie Orfanides characterized Daniel as the "Los Angeles based comedian, actor, and YouTube star".[12] Hollywood Life writer Emy La Croix commented on the activity of Daniel's fans, noting after he had received a poisonous spider bite from a brown recluse spider, fears of his death "became the top trend on Twitter."[57] De Elizabeth wrote for Teen Vogue of the social media phenomenon, "We're glad that Elijah was OK, and this is definitely a good lesson to stay far away from brown recluse spiders."[58] Shawn Binder of Paper Magazine called Daniel the "Los Angeles content king".[4] The Washington Post described Daniel as "a social media star and actor".[9] Mary Emily O'Hara of The Daily Dot called Daniel, "a comedian and Vine star".[13]
