NiziU is a Japanese girl group, formed through 2020 Japanese survival reality show Nizi Project[1], in collaboration with Sony Music and JYP Entertainment. It has nine members: Mako Yamaguchi, Riku Oe, Rima Yokoi, Rio Hanabashi, Maya Katsumura, Miihi Suzuno, Mayuka Ogou, Ayaka Arai and Nina Hillman.

The group is managed by both Sony Music Japan and South Korea's JYP Entertainment.

History

Formation through Nizi Project

NiziU was formed through survival reality show Nizi Project which was streaming weekly through Hulu Japan and eventually distributed internationally via JYP Entertainment's YouTube channel.[2] The show was touted by J. Y. Park as a show to group various people carrying different colours together to shine a beautiful light, whilst keeping the JYP colour to a much higher standard.[3] The show and the group was also the second (the first being Boy Story) to follow JYP Entertainment's "Globalisation by Localisation"[4] strategy, collaborating with local record label Sony Music for management of the show and group.[5]

The show was split up into two seasons. The first season showing the auditions of prospective members around Japan, cutting the prospective lineup to 14 from 26 girls chosen by J.Y. Park whilst the second season moving the girls to train in South Korea for six months, and revealing the debut member lineup which was nine members.[6]

Prior to the show, many members of NiziU had prior training periods or entertainment activity in Japan and South Korea. Maya Katsumura was a former trainee of YG Entertainment's Japanese subsidiary 'YG Japan', whilst Miihi Suzuno, Mako Yamaguchi and Rima Yokoi were previous trainees of JYP Entertainment. Rio Hanabashi was a former trainee of Exile's label LDH and was set to debut in Bunnies, before leaving citing personal reasons to her decision. Nina Hillman starred in multiple musical theatre performances and in the American TV Show "Divine Shadow." After moving to Japan, she appeared in some Japanese movies and worked as a reporter for NHK E TV variety show called Suiensā.

On 26 June 2020, the final episode of Nizi Project and thus the debut lineup was revealed to the public. It was revealed that Sony Music would co-manage NiziU with JYP Entertainment and thus would also handle distribution rights of all future releases of the group.[7]

2020-present: Pre-debut with Make You Happy

On 26 June 2020, the group released their first image teaser for their pre-debut EP titled 'Make You Happy' through social media websites.[8] A MV teaser was then released on 29 June 2020.[9] The digital pre-release EP was released on 30 June 2020 in Japan and 1 July 2020 internationally.
