Mekor Chaim (also Makor Haim) is a neighborhood in southwest Jerusalem, Israel.
Etymology
Mekor Chaim (lit. "Source of life") was named for Chaim Cohen, who purchased the land in 1913.
History
Mekor Chaim was built in 1925, four years after the establishment of Rehavia, on the city's southern fringes. [1]It was planned as a village of 20 small farmsteads, but developed into an urban frontier neighborhood. The lands of Mekor Chaim were purchased in 1913 with funds donated by Chaim Cohen, a wealthy Jew from Lodz, Poland. After World War I, the Jewish National Fund bought additional lands in the area. [2] Mekor Chaim was located near Malha and Beit Safafa and the road to it passed through Arab areas. During Israel's War of Independence in 1948, the Haganah was stationed there and the fierce battles fought in Mekor Chaim stand out in the annals of Jerusalem under siege.[3]
Education
The Sudbury Democratic School is located in Mekor Chaim.[4]
