Damar Romeyelle Hamlin[1] (born March 24, 1998) is an American football safety for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Pittsburgh.

On January 2, 2023, during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Hamlin collapsed on the field after delivering a tackle and was administered CPR before being rushed to the hospital.[2]

Early life and education

Hamlin grew up in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, and attended Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.[3] He was named first-team All-State and the Class AAAA Defensive Player of the Year.[4]

College career

Hamlin enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh to play college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers. He played in three games as a freshman before suffering an injury and redshirting.[5] As a redshirt freshman he recorded 41 tackles with one interception in nine games played.[6] Hamlin led the Panthers with 76 tackles and two interceptions as a redshirt sophomore and was named honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He had 84 tackles with 10 passes broken up as a redshirt junior.[7] He was named a team captain going into his final season and was named second-team All-ACC after leading the team with 66 tackles and seven passes broken up.[8][9]

The Buffalo Bills selected Hamlin in the sixth round, with the 212th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.[12] He signed his four-year rookie contract with Buffalo on May 21, 2021.[13] After playing a reserve role his rookie season, Hamlin became one of the Bills' starting safeties in 2022 after Micah Hyde suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 2.[14]

Monday Night Football collapse

On January 2, 2023, during a Week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football, Hamlin made a jarring[15] tackle on wide receiver Tee Higgins.[16] After the collision, Hamlin momentarily got to his feet and then collapsed backward to the ground. Hamlin was then placed on a stretcher and an ambulance came onto the field as most of the players from both teams came off the sidelines to kneel or stand around Hamlin. First responders initiated CPR and administered defibrillation to Hamlin on the field for 10 minutes.[17][18] Hamlin was also given oxygen, intubated, and administered an intravenous solution (IV).[17] He was transported to University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center at roughly 9:23 p.m. EST[19] and was reported to be in critical condition.[20] The game was suspended with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter and was postponed shortly after 10 p.m., about one hour after Hamlin collapsed.[21][22][23]
