New Orleans - panorama 1919

Probably made from the rooftop of the Gunewald Hotel.

At far left center from the top, the "Storyville" district is visible, with the mansions of Basin Street facing the long railway barn on the Basin neutral ground. Next in is Rampart Street, with such landmarks on the lake side of the street as Our Lady of Guadalupe Church recognizable.

In the middle of the left half of the panorama are the upper portions of the fascades of the Audubon, Kress, and Maison Blanche buildings facing Canal Street. The spire of St. Louis Cathedral can be seen in the distance above the Maison Blanche Building

To the right of the Maison Blanche Building, a section of the French Quarter is seen, with the Courthouse on Royal Street prominent. The Mississippi River with Algiers Point across it in the distance. Just left of the center line, the (D.H.) Holmes department store on Canal Street; above it the high rise of the Monteleone Hotel.

To right of the center line, Canal Street is seen streching to the Mississippi, with many buildings on the downriver side seen. The old sugar refinery is near the riverfront.

The rest of the right side shows the "American Sector" or Central Business District, at the time a mix of early 20th century high-rises with a large number of generations old early and mid 19th century row houses still intact at the time. Front center of the right half is the dome of Jesuit Church. Behind it, the tallest building is the Whitney Bank Tower on St. Charles Avenue. Further right the steeple of St. Patrick Church seen in distance. At far right of photo Barrone Street extends upwards to distance. In contrast to the clearer views to the left, the view towards Uptown at far right is obscured by haze/fog/smog.
