Description

John Rouse Merriott Chard, Bronze bust by Bertrand Mackennal, a copy of the original bust by Papworth. John Rouse Merriott Chard was born in Plymouth on 21 December 1847. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1868. He was posted to South Africa in 1878. On 22nd January, Lieutenant Chard found himself in command of the small mission at the ford of Rorke's Drift. For valour in the following action, he was awarded the Victoria cross.

Photograph was taken in the Somerset County Museum in Taunton on 29-Oct-05.
