Proposed poll
[edit]Re the caps and title case, I asked Aleandr and he says I should ask you about this. I am considering launching a new information poll at WT:TITLE, to get a better idea of where people stand on the changes that Born2cycle has proposed. I have drafted a poll in my user subpage at User:Dicklyon/Recognizability poll. I'd like to post this to WT:TITLE soon, if you think it won't be disruptive to the ongoing process. It might even solicit some opinions that people can cite in evidence. Does that seem like an OK idea? Dicklyon (talk) 16:23, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'll take a proper look a little later today. Just on for bits and pieces momentarily. Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:40, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
- Casliber I think your words are being used out of context, and perhaps you should look in detail at the discussions at WP:AT which have since last November discussing the use of capitals obliquely.
- The question has repeatedly raised by Tony1 etc at Wikipedia talk:Article titles titles should include more wording to make it clear to a reader what the topic is about. But that raises lots of questions about Wikipedia:AT#Precision and disambiguation, for which there has been a broad consensus for many years. During these discussions it became clear that there had been an edit to WP:AT last year that had been a simplification of the words that unintentionally had had changed the meaning of "Recognizability". It was proposed that this change be reverted. There is a detailed account of this at User:Born2cycle/DearElen.
- There have been two polls on this specific point. The first one had a clear consensus and the second one was 17 in favour with no dissent for near identical wording: "Recognizability – Is the candidate title a recognizable name or description of the topic to someone familiar with (though not necessarily expert in) the topic?"
- Now your here is being used to justify another poll that does not include the wording that has clearly emerged as the consensus wording (and if I were not assuming good faith would say that it seems to be a repeat of the tactic used when poll 1 was launched). I have suggested that this most recent poll is collapsed as we clearly do not need another one and there is a perfectly good summary at User:Born2cycle/DearElen, and your comment is being used to justify continuing with the poll (hence I why I write I think that your words are begin taken out of context). -- PBS (talk) 23:28, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oh dear....I need some time to digest all this....Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:27, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit]All of the following species are worth 2x points; let me know if you'd be interested in collaborating in one or more for bonus points in a later round. Sasata (talk) 06:54, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

- Agaricus campestris
- Amanita caesarea
- Amanita citrina
- Amanita pantherina
- Amanita rubescens
- Amanita virosa
- Armillaria mellea
- Coprinus comatus
- Shiitake
- Clitocybe nuda
- Macrolepiota procera
- Marasmius oreades
- Pleurotus ostreatus
- Phallus impudicus
- Russula emetica
- Suillus luteus
- Hydnum repandum
Hahaha – thank heavens for European mushrooms :))) – yeah, I'd like to buff Clitocybe nuda (which was one of the yummiest mushrooms I've eaten), and we really should be improving the other mass-eaten edibles. Also I buffed the sickener for DYK so would be good to finish the job....Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:02, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll move Clitocybe nuda and Russula emetica closer to the top of "the list". I agree the popular edibles would be good to do as well, but they're hard ... we'll see how free time & motivation plays out over the next few months. Sasata (talk) 19:05, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Pakistan FAC
[edit]Hi, I was advised by one of the reviewers to ask active FAC editors to review the Pakistan article's FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Pakistan/archive1. It has been out for nine days, the problems mentioned in the start were fixed but there have been no further comments. There was a question about a dispute that occurred after the nomination, I've explained about it on the FAC page that there's been no consensus for it on the talk page and the current version is as of consensus. Please take a look at the article and drop your review comments and/or vote. Thanks. --lTopGunl (talk) 17:23, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

WP:V mediation step two
[edit]Hello, and thanks again for taking part in the MedCab mediation about Wikipedia:Verifiability. I noticed that you haven't yet submitted a draft of the lede as I outlined in the instructions for step two, so I am just sending this message as a reminder. The deadline was 10:00 am (UTC) on Sunday, March 11, but as there are still eight drafts left to come in I am extending this by a day, to 10:00 am (UTC) on Monday, March 12. To recap, I would like you to draft your ideal version of the lead to the policy and post it on the mediation page, without any commentary. You can find the full instructions at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/27 February 2012/Wikipedia:Verifiability#Step two. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I would especially appreciate you getting in touch if you may have difficulty meeting the new deadline. Best wishes — Mr. Stradivarius ♫ 13:52, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hello again Casliber, this is to let you know that I am extending the deadline by another day, to 10:00 am (UTC) on Tuesday, March 13. This time, I'm going to go ahead without people who don't submit a draft before the deadline. Don't worry, though - If I progress without you, then it doesn't mean that I'm kicking you out, it just means that you will have to catch up when you are ready to participate again. Also, if you let me know that you will have problems submitting things on time, then I may be able to make concessions for you, so I would be grateful if you could do that rather than just leaving it until the deadline. Thanks — Mr. Stradivarius ♫ 13:38, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

This is a decent article but it just needs a little tweeking. It would be a shame if it was delisted. It's well sourced, contains no original research. It's broad in its coverage, it's neutral and unbiased. Images are relevant to the topic and all are tagged with proper licenses. The prose is the biggest issue and I believe a little group effort put in and we'll have this article in shape in no time. There are some other issues with the article but nothing that can't be corrected or re-written. I left this message in the reassessment page: Talk:Black_mamba/GA2. Just thought I'd get somebody's attention because the article seems to have been ignored. Cheers! RedGKS talk contribs. 00:08, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Rwanda FAC
[edit]Hi Casliber
Just to say that I have had a look at your final point at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Rwanda/archive2 regarding the foreign relations, and expanded the paragraph a bit with references to France and Uganda. This part actually proved harder than I thought it would as there is not a vast amount of published literature, and I was worried that it would end up sounding like a series of bullet points if I tried to detail the histories of relations with every country. Would be interested to hear your views now, anyway. I'm reasonably hopeful at the moment that the FAC might be successful as all other points raised seem to be satisfactorily resolved now. Thanks — Amakuru (talk) 22:58, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Core Contest
[edit]Hi I just spotted you had revived this but appears too late. I proposed to Jimbo and the foundation a while back to introduce a Core Contest for Article of the Month every month funded by the foundation. the core contest motivated us to slog our guts out to produce whopping articles like Deforestation in Brazil, Middle Ages etc. I think if it was well advertised it would lure in new contributors and also get more of the regulars working on the most important articles. I see you have Sue Gardner on board as a judge, but is the current contest funded by Wikimedia Australia or something or the main foundation? Because its something I'm very interested in helping promoting and think it would be of great benefit to article growth and improvement. But it has to be well advertised!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:23, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
- Ah well, see here - it was supposed to run in Jan but...well you can see. Anyway, I guffed by not getting something in the signpost. This was a sort of "suck it and see what happens" sorta thing. Once the deadline has passed, we'll have a look at what got improved and stuff and have a think methinks....Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:32, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Thankyou so much for doing that. I think Amazon vouchers as a prize would be the most value though as editors can buy books to use as a sources and feed back into the project. The core articles of course are priority but I was also thinking about a similar DYK of the Month scheme to try to attract new editors and more articles! Yes, the thing is is advertising. We need to publicize it as much as possible. The fact I wasn't even aware of it says something.. I would say if we advertised it in a banner at the top of pages like a "Fancy winning $xxx of Amazon vouchers? Then enter our monthly Core Contest competition and have a go at writing! I think we need something catchy to reel in new editors.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:28, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
- I've been undecided about how much to promote the reward thing....but we'll see how it goes anyway...my thinking was different themes at different times, so Women's article...systemic bias etc. as ideas for other ones. Casliber (talk · contribs) 18:14, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.
Congratulations to Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!
It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Harassment of editors and Arbcom transparency
[edit]On my talk page at User_talk:Russavia#Comment_from_AGK, there is a discussion between myself and your fellow Arb User:AGK, concerning an issue which came to the attention of Arbcom. As the various links and diffs show, many editors saw the recent RFC/U against User:Fae as harassment, at best, and as homophobic harassment, at worst.
AGK firstly stated that he "voted" to ban Delicious Carbuncle, then has "corrected" himself to state that he merely was in favour of the Committee reviewing the case; either way there was opposition on the Committee to either banning Delicious Carbuncle or even reviewing the harassment that Fae was being subjected to.
As an Arb, the community elected you to represent the community for the community. The Committee time and time again pushes on editors who come before it that transparency is essential in our editing; in fact, transparency is one of the key tenets of this project, however the Arbcom often does not act in the same transparent way that it (and the community) expects of the community itself.
AGK states on my talk page that one can only expect a transparent hearing if a request for arbitration is filed, and states that most Arbcom business is conducted this way. This notion is somewhat correct, but it is also very wrong. As the committee time and time makes a point of stating that community transparency is essential, the community also expects the same of the Committee -- at all times. The Committee also makes many decisions "behind closed doors", and when pushed to explain decisions cites various "get out of jail free cards" to avoid being transparent to the community-at-large. This includes decisions such as banning editors for things done offwiki which can't clearly be attributed to that editor, or unbanning editors with a history of socking, etc, etc.
In aid of this, and in the interests of transparency to the Community at large, I am asking that you answer the following questions:
- Did you discuss the harassment of Fae on the Arbcom-l mailing list?
- If you did discuss this on the mailing list, were you in favour or against the Committee reviewing the information?
- If the discussion got to anything resembling a vote, did you vote in favour or against banning Delicious Carbuncle?
These are very simple questions which one is able to answer if they are truly for transparency both on the Committee and in the community in general, and I would expect that many in the community would be wanting transparent answers to these questions.
The last thing, it is of course Fae's choice if he wishes to request a case for Arbitration, but these questions are not being asked to have an end-run around the Arbitration process, but are being asked in the interests of transparency on a specific example that the Committee was aware of and refused to act upon. I would expect Fae and other editors (especially LGBT editors) would be wanting transparent answers here now, before deciding if they wish to act. Russavia ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) 07:53, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- (1) yes, (2) consensus on whether we're arbcom or govcom varies (ie.e dispute resolution vs user conduct review/both/which takes precedence) is still undecided. There are times that we'd accept cases if people requested a case, where we've not sprung one de novo so to speak (3) the issue here is a complex one in which evidence really needs to be examined systematically before proper decisions can be made - I only glanced at some stuff, and lacking anyone referring it to us didn't look further. Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:38, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answers Casliber, but can you please clarify your answers to 2) and 3), as they are asking whether you as an individual Arb opined for or against particular course of action, rather than on the general role of Arbcom as a group. Thanks Russavia ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) 09:05, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- (2) Had someone requested a case, I would have accepted, given the complexity of it. (3) I deleted the threads from my inbox and have not yet resubscribed to look at the archives. My recall is that I initially thought (or posted) leaning in favour of a ban, but after reading bits and pieces realised I was going to have to do a whole lot of reading myself to figure where I stood. When one can actually wield a banhammer, and one is faced with the prospect of using it, one (well I do anyway) become alot more circumspect if there are grey areas to consider...and there are some here. - NB: I'd like to have an RfC on the structure of RfCs - the lack of oppose sections means we have no idea about whether non-support indicates genuine opposition or just boredom/disinterest. Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:41, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for being so forthright and honest with your answers here Casliber; it is appreciated. I am sure that at the end of the day there is going to be some much needed critique of Arbcom, which is going to have to be considered -- remembering of course that critique isn't necessarily a negative thing.
- Also, great DYK directly below here, I went thru that area some 20 years ago. Looking back, probably be unable to do that again these days....I'm getting old :( Russavia ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) 21:46, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Two
[edit]Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!
- Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
- First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
- Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
- Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
- Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
- Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.
You are receiving The Tea Leaf after expressing interest or participating in the Teahouse! To remove yourself from receiving future newsletters, please remove your username here. - Sarah (talk) 21:35, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

DYK Review Question
[edit]Hi, I'm finishing up my first DYK review, and I just wanted to check and make sure I'm doing it right. I reviewed the article Losh, Wilson and Bell, nominated on March 21. See the review at Template:Did you know nominations/Losh, Wilson and Bell. After approving a hook, I added the hook and image to the queue at Prep area 4. Is there anything else I need to do? Alternately, did I overstep anything? Thanks. Boneyard90 (talk) 16:39, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- The process was fine - there are a several references that need formatting, and [3] is not a Reliable Source I'd think. I suspect something has been published somewhere that the writer can replace with.
- I often just roll up my sleeves and format the refs myself if they're simple. Anyway, just tidy (or get the writer to tidy) the refs. The other main issue is checking that the text reflects the sources but does not paraphrase them. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:46, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Banksia aspleniifolia
[edit]Hi, I saw your change to the "nomen dubium" statement on the Banksia oblongifolia page, and am still puzzled. The description looks okay, I think, it includes some leaf shape description, at least, so it isn't one of those "the plant is pretty" or "it has a different DNA sequence" problems that don't qualify as descriptions. The paragraph on the wikipedia page is still, I think, difficult to read, so it would be good to rephrase it or shorten it. What did you decide the problem was with the description? Thanks. Nadiatalent (talk) 21:15, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
- It wasn't me that had a problem with the Description but Alex George who published a monograph of the genus in 1981. He wrote that the description of the leaves was insufficient to diagnose the species as the description could apply to some other species found in the same area. Furthermore the material that was used for the description has been lost, so it is unclear whether what Salisbury had was oblongifolia anyway. All australian authorities have followed George thereafter in this. Given our role at wikipedia is to reflect/report opinion and not create it, that's what I've done (personally I liked the name aspleniifolia...) Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:36, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I am glad you brought that up - as I had not realised it mentions the leaves are hairy underneath. The other issue is how Salisbury was perceived (i.e. negatively) on account of his getting Brown's work and publishing it before Brown himself and trumping him on names. I might ask Peter Weston and Alex George about it...hmmm. 21:42, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
- I think there is still a problem here, as it sounds as if Salisbury's names are being ignored, but they are actually validly published according to the code. I don't see Salisbury's work listed in Appendix VI or the names listed as rejected. The original wording about nomen dubium seems to be correct, but completely out-of-date because the situation would be in need of nomenclatural action. Nadiatalent (talk) 17:03, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
- The phrase used in the text is " he concluded that it does not diagnose the species to the exclusion of others and is hence not a validly published name" - i.e. George concluded it is not a valid name as if it is, then it has precedence. I'm guessing it is nomen illegitimum on basis of 6.4 something here, but none of the links fit really. The issue is 32.2. "A diagnosis of a taxon is a statement of that which in the opinion of its author distinguishes the taxon from other taxa." - now, George feels that the description is insufficient diagnosis, which is a prerequisite for valid publication, yet there is not link to what it should be called if it fails this criterion....Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:51, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Western Jackdaw
[edit]Yesterday I had an editing conflict with you when working on the Etymology section of Western Jackdaw. I tend to make all the alterations in a paragraph or section before saving it which makes a conflict more likely. I propose restricting my editing of the article to the morning here - in practice that means times between 6.00 and 12.00 as recorded in the "History" of the article. If we cooperate on this it will prevent conflicts and unnecessary duplication. An alternative would be for me to edit the article during the 18.00 to 21.00 slot but I usually work on new articles at this time, my evening. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:06, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. I usually do lots of little edits. Rather than use set times, you can stick this template - Template:Under construction at the top of the page just before you edit and I will leave it until you take it down. Does that sound easier? Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:19, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool
[edit]Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.
For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

- Nephiliskos, looking at the changes you made first up, I am not entirely surprised hat someone reverted. Why did you make that change in the first place and remove chunks of cited and nicely laid-out content? Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:37, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
- I tried to present a clearly lined-up content, easy to follow and well-referenced. The old version was full of redundations and some of the sources were questionable. I have no problem with discussing about workings, but I´m not sure if it had been just a sign of good manners, if ye talk with the editor first and tell him about yer doubts or simply smash down other user´s work, no matter how "good" or "bad" it was. At least Niemti could have informed me. --Nephiliskos (talk) 12:46, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, well what to do now....why not open discussion on the talk and raise particular concerns about certain references there? Casliber (talk · contribs) 15:17, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I've put boatloads of hours into trying to clean up the mess that was there. It's still not great, but at least it's not horribly inaccurate. I think I've removed all inappropriate uses of primary sources, I can't do anything with "History", but I hope treatment text is now at least not misleading. Conflict resolution
[edit]People started editing and re-editing the genre for the band Combichrist so to avoid an editing war, I placed a tag by the genre and asked users to sort it on the main page. 89.244.71.38 (Who keeps changing their IP, and has stated so) has ignored the request and reverts the edit each and every time I ask hin to sort it on the talk page. He's been abusive on the talk page, and has said he'll keep reverting the edits, rather than debate the issue properly, as an adult. Each attempt has been ignored, so I'd like to request semi protection for the Combichrist page so it can't be abused by random ip's like the user has been doing, as it's the only way to end the editing war and stop him posting abuse. WikiCup 2012 April newsletter
[edit]Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.
65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Matthewedwards (submissions) and Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.
An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Main page appearance: Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
[edit]This is a note to let the main editors of Red-tailed Black Cockatoo know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on May 4, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 4, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is a large cockatoo native to Australia. It is more common in the drier parts of the continent. Five subspecies are recognised, differing most significantly in beak size. Although the more northerly subspecies are widespread, the two southern subspecies are under threat. Adult Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are around 60 centimetres (24 in) in length and sexually dimorphic. Males are completely black in colour, excepting their prominent red tail bands; the slightly smaller females are black with yellow barring on chest with yellow grading to red spots over their crest, cheeks and wings and have yellow-orange tail stripes. The species is usually found in eucalyptus woodlands, or along water courses. In the more northerly parts of the country, these cockatoos are commonly seen in large flocks. They are seed eaters and cavity nesters. As such, they depend on trees with fairly large diameters, generally Eucalyptus. Populations in southeastern Australia are threatened by the reduction in forest cover and by other habitat alterations. Of the black cockatoos, the red-tailed black is the most adaptable to aviculture, although black cockatoos are much rarer and much more expensive outside Australia. (more...)

Hi. Somebody has raised some pertinent questions on Talk:Depression (mood). I'm not sure I agree, but I think they deserve a better informed response than I can offer. I've had serious concerns about the article all along. I've been trying to keep it a simple directory to the relevant articles, but feel there's something not quite right about using DSM/ICD descriptions from the syndromes to define the mood. Don't know. Anyway, if you have any thoughts, they'd be very welcome. Maybe, if there's substantial literature on dysphoria, we could use that for the basis of the definition of the mood - they seem to be interchangeable terms. Don't know. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 03:00, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Casliber. Could you look into this DYK nomination? It was promoted to prep 3 by you, but another admin found two lines with CV. The problem has been fixed since then, but I think the nomination is not in the list of those for reviewing currently. Mohamed CJ (talk) 16:10, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

- I had not seen that before...hmmm...I guess she illustrates naturalised French people? I must admit I haven't edited or had an interest in the article previously. Maybe raise it on the talk page or look through the archives. These articles often end up with extended discussion about who is in the infobox. Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:57, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Western Jackdaw
[edit]I am in agreement with Andrew Gray that by using lower case letters for jackdaw but uppercase for Western Jackdaw the article is anomalous. To say "A jackdaw and a Rook" seems wrong. Would it be a good thing to capitalise jackdaw throughout the article? I'll be happy to do so if you think this would be best. Alternatively we could replace "jackdaw" with "Western Jackdaw" throughout the article or "Western Jackdaw" and "jackdaw" with "Jackdaw" throughout. (I tend to think the last idea might be the best - the bird to me is a jackdaw not a western jackdaw, a term I have never met before.)
On another matter, I am concerned by the alterations being made by Ornithodiez to the article Pelican. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:15, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
- We've had this problem on American White Ibis and White Stork among other birds....let me compare the pages..I meant to read some of the sources for pelican to get my head around them. Main page appearance: cockatoo
[edit]This is a note to let the main editors of cockatoo know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on May 16, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 16, 2012.
A cockatoo is any of the 21 species belonging to the bird family Cacatuidae. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the parrot order Psittaciformes. Cockatoos are instantly recognisable by their showy crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey, or black, and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks, or tail. On average they are larger than other parrots. Cockatoos prefer to eat seeds, tubers, corms, fruit, flowers and insects. They often feed in large flocks, particularly when ground-feeding. Cockatoos are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. Some cockatoo species have been adversely affected by habitat loss, particularly from a shortage of suitable nesting hollows after large mature trees are cleared; conversely, some species have adapted well to human changes and are considered agricultural pests. Cockatoos are popular birds in aviculture, but their needs are difficult to cater for. The Cockatiel is the cockatoo species that is easiest to care for and is by far the most frequently kept in captivity. (more...)

- I guess the point I'd like to make is you often never know what folks are doing IRL (I've burnt pancakes while ducking back to the computer to revert or add something), and sometimes folks are busy. Also if it looks plausible and it's a pretty accessible topic, maybe just have a google and see if you can add sources sometimes. It makes this place a whole lot friendlier. Is there any stuff you like writing about? If you do, you can always drop me a line for a second set of eyes on an article. Good luck anyway, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:49, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Tropical plants
[edit]Hello, How are you? I need your help. I thank you your help in the articles. I ask you: Can you find more people willing writing in tropical trees, genera and families? I ask you if you could enlarge some articles making better known this group of trees in Wikipedia, adding links to genera and families and writing information and asking people if they are interested in writing about topics as tropical trees articles, tropical forest articles or botanical or biodiversity articles. Do you know Wikipedia forums that could be interested about these type of articles? They are welcome too. I thank you very much.
I am from Spain and my mother language is not English language. Many country side areas, and Natural areas and Living beings are in Countries where population cannot collaborate with Wikipedia, but their Natural World and its highly economically valuable species are very important too in the human knowledge and developtment of the mankind. People should have information because these matters are important, not just a curiosity only. This unknow world is from Poles to ecuator, in unoccupied oceanic areas closely to Europe, in Deserts as Sahara, or whatever. But to me the main aim is to gather the abundant information disperse about living communities and living beings that have existed for millions of years because they are disappearing and in 20 years they will are not longer exist. Echigo mole again
[edit]A sockpuppet account Jello carotids (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) who has already been blocked for trolling on the WP:AN thread that another user opened on Echigo mole has been blocked as "sock troll" by FPaS. He also opened a SPI report on me similar to that of a previously blocked sockpuppet of Echigo mole, having located legitimate alternative accounts, used either for collecting information on the use of vodafone IPs for socking or collecting large numbers of rough diffs as a preliminary to submitting evidence on arbcom pages. Jclemens has not run a checkuser on the blocked account Jello carotids. Instead he is suggesting that my collapsing on AN and reversion there and elsewhere, which are similar to those of mutliple other users, are a sign of battleground behaviour. He has restored the SPI report on me deleted by FPaS. On 29 March, Southend sofa (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) made a similar report which was dismissed by several administrators as without merit. Southend sofa, because of a set of anomolies in their editing related to other sockpuppet accounts of Echigo mole, was blocked indefinitely as a sockpuppet of Echigo mole 2 weeks later by DeltaQuad. When the SPI report on me was listed, one of the alternative accounts in use for the arbcom review was listed and all the raw diff files were present. 3 days later, since the rough diffs were still needed, I coalesced the rough diffs into one file in a new account that was reported by Jello carotids, identically to Southend sofa. Jclemens seems to be militating to change the way serial wikihounders whose sockpuppetry shouts out through a megaphone are treated. He seems to be doing this in only one specific case, where he favours the sockpuppet, known for continued harrassment and wikihounding of an established user for 3 years, to the detriment of that established user. Please could you take a look at the SPI report on me (a declared account) and the two outstanding reports on Echigo mole. Thanks in advance, Mathsci (talk) 22:10, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.
This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Thanks for !voting

Thank you, Casliber, for !voting at my successful RFA; I am humbled that you put your trust in me. I grant you this flower, which, if tended to properly, will grow to be the fruit of Wikipedia's labours. Not eucalyptus, I know, but I wouldn't feel right giving you an exploding tree. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:33, 3 June 2012 (UTC) |

Writing
[edit]Hi, I dont know if you remember our last conversation here but you said if I need help with anything come to you, so here I am! I was wondering if you would kindly be able to assist me to get an article up to a better standard, without any tags and better on the project scale and possibly GA?! Thanks --Chip123456 (talk) 08:08, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- Absolutely, I'd be happy to. Which article or articles do you have in mind? I have a few ideas about scope of articles so maybe think of a few and I can offer some ideas. Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:22, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- Great! Well before I became, let's say 'obsessed' with rollback, I used to edit railway articles a lot and notable people, for example royal family members etc. What ideas have you got in mind? --Chip123456 (talk) 08:30, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- Aaah right, ok, I see where you're at - I was going to suggest a reasonably sized railway station, but looks like London Paddington station is already a GA. Looking through your contributions, I see Great Western Main Line as not a bad choice but already buffed up a fair bit. Articles like Chippenham railway station are good too -they are often quite small so easy to get everything written on - see Herne Hill railway station which is now a Featured Article as something to aspire to (and copy). Wessex Main Line is broader, so might be a good one too. One thing to do is to go to a local library to get a local history book, which will give you a massive advantage and you can slot in masses of detail. I like this idea as it is one way wikipedia improves what is online by adding to it, rather than folks just doing google searches. Anyway, lots of choices. Do you have any local history books? Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:49, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- I was the reviewer of HH railway station on it's GA review! And I don't have any history books on things like this, but I tend to use google and things like that! I think probably things like small stations, like Chippenham is a good idea, because it is considered a main line station, you can always get lots of info about it from most places. --Chip123456 (talk) 09:01, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- I've added a new referenced section on there. Any ideas on some improvements? --Chip123456 (talk) 10:45, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Botany
[edit]I thank you your help in the articles about botany and I hope you will write about genera and families in future. I ask you: Can you find more people willing writing in tropical trees, genera and families?
You could enlarge about this topic in Wikipedia forums that could be interested about these type of articles. They are welcome too. I thank you very much. Really there are few people interested in botany and you can find information in other Wikipedias or translate information from other languages. If you are not very interested in write about botany or your friends are not interested, you can tell them, that botany is a good way to practise another language and learn about vocabulary.
I am from Spain and my mother language is not English language, besides my english language is really bad. To me the main aim is to gather the abundant information disperse already on wikipedia, but the information is not in the place where people seek is looking for it. Please, don't be afraid, you can help, you not need to be an expert. Even you not need to be very interested in living beings. I don't know how motivate you to write about botany, but I ask you. Thank you very much by read this. Curritocurrito (talk) 10:01, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Great job, but I noticed a few errors in conversions. 10 metres and 5 metres were given at 30 ft when 10 metres is about 33 ft and 5 metres is 16ft. If you could use Template:Convert in future. Regards.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:21, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Jackdaws and frogs
[edit]"My" jackdaws are keeping me well amused. I notice that one young adult has a leg band so it must have arrived from elsewhere. As I cross the yard, I throw the jackdaws a handful of hen pellets when I am going to feed the hens. In anticipation of this, they congregate nearby and the boldest ones land on the ground near me. They actually prefer small bits of the dry extruded complete food I use for the dogs. The other day I threw a single hen pellet to one and it picked it up as if to eat it and then dropped it again, clearly signalling that it was disappointed that it was not dog food!
I have been working on the article Frog. Do you have access to the full content of this research paper? I have used it but only have the abstract and would like to mention in the article what species of frog the research involved. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:21, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Four
[edit]Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!
- Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!
Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!
- What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
- ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
- Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
- 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
- Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
- New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
- Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
- New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
- Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
- Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
- Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
- Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
- Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
- Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

Ponies!
[edit]Casliber, New Forest pony is at FA, and we have one very good reviewer on it, but I think there needs to be three votes for FA status? Am I correct? If so, can you possibly tip off a couple good reviewers (or peek at it yourself) and lend a hand to the review. Our dear User Pesky did most of the work, but is dealing with a family thing, so I've kind of been shepherding the FAR. Montanabw(talk) 21:43, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
- Gah! talk about bad timing...still will have a squiz a bit later. Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:29, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

FAR on New Forest Pony got bogged down with a minor techie thing we got sorted out, but due to the slowdown we only have you voting support so far and the other reviewers seem to have bailed. How to get reviewers to take another whack? Pesky has a lot to deal with IRL, but I'm trying to round up the cavalry of reviewers and see if we can give her the gold star on that article yet. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Hi there. I already submitted Drowned God to DYK here, but then I noticed you were one of the active admins for DYK, and since we've recently had some tangential interaction at the Ankheg AfD, I thought I'd ask you about my nomination. Are exceptions are ever made for articles that don't technically hit the five days/5x requirement under certain extenuating circumstances? If they aren't, I'd like to pull down my nomination and see if I can somehow squeeze more content into the article in the next few days, but I'm afraid I'm about at the limit of the sources I've found. Anyway, thanks for any advice or information you can offer. —Torchiest talkedits 03:50, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- In general, folks are pretty strict with the 5x expansion, so if you can find a bit more to make it fit, good luck. I've missed the five day deadline a few times myself over the years....Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:59, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

- Yeah well, the information is cited by the other cites - the images are a nice visual, so I suspect it's more appropriate to have it as an external link. However, it is more directly linked and useful to be located where it is currently really. Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:18, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Tried to find a featured Banksia article yesterday to show to another botanical editor but wasn't fast enough before she left the room. Cheers, Whiteghost.ink (talk) 03:48, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- You couldn't find one ?! Oh well......I'd gone to bed early and then got woken...and couldn't get back to sleep. Have fun at wikimania...Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:09, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

merge proposition for Lamia (D&D)
[edit]Hello, as you took part in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lamia (Dungeons & Dragons) (2nd nomination), which closed on "no consensus", I'm bringing to your attention a discussion on whether to merge or not that has opened on the article talk page.Folken de Fanel (talk) 10:46, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Core contest: how core is core?
[edit]- hello, what hierarchical level constitutes "core" in your contest? Tks – Ling.Nut (talk) 04:11, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
That was going to be my question, will things on the Level 4 Vital Articles list count, or just the Level 3? Keilana|Parlez ici 04:13, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- Best look at item 2 of the Wikipedia:The_Core_Contest#Rules - my thinking was we'd take it on a case by case basis, but there is no black-and-white - for vital articles 1>2>3>4. Core articles...hmmm, somewhere between 3 and 4, but underrepresented articles (such as food, particularly healthy food and staples etc.) might get some kudos. But a whopping improvement of a lvl 4 might trump a so-so improvement of lvl 3. Having three judges will help here.....One reason I kept it short was to keep it fun. Core Contest link
[edit]I fixed the link in your announcements (e.g. here). Just a heads up in case you decide to post it anywhere else. —Torchiest talkedits 04:58, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Of paintings and putative psychiatric disorders
[edit]Hi, Casliber. If you'd like to take off your page protector hat and don your art historian hat for a sec, your insight would be appreciated here. I think it's a reasonable request and am inclined to make the edit, but I'd really like another opinion from someone more familiar with the article. Rivertorch (talk) 07:57, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Excessively long articles
[edit]I think you are very public spirited and dedicated to helping others and the good of Wikipedia! With regards to the Bivalvia FAC, thank you for your help. I have split off the 2010 taxonomy section. On looking at the instructions on how to do a split, I see that 60k is thought to be big enough for any article and 100k probably excessive. The trouble is that in trying to give comprehensive coverage, articles inevitably get longer. Bivalvia is well over 100k and so is Frog. In looking at the latter and how it could be reduced in size, I wondered about splitting off the Locomotion section. What do you think? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:34, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hah, you think those are long....have a look at Betelgeuse....Major depressive disorder was my longest FAC I think. I think if you've added everything you think you need to frog, then copyediting might help a little - but it is still an ok size. Frog (by Dr PDAs tool) has 55 kB (9335 words) readable prose size, and bivalvia has 53 kB (8873 words) "readable prose size". They're both fine. I can see some trimming in frog ......Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:57, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- PS: User:Dr pda/prosesize is a really really nifty tool to add to your monobook. Have you ever tinkered with that? Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:57, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- PPS: Did I show you User:Tony1/How to improve your writing before? Extremely valuable read....Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:03, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- The 4 examples you used on the talk page predated my involvement and I have mostly been adding rather than copyediting. I will have a look at your PSs. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:26, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- Okay - I'll look more later. But at this stage I don't think I'd be moving sections out just yet. Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:17, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Piercing point DYK
[edit]So, I saw a bot moved the DYK for piercing point to the 'waiting' list, and I got a credit on my talk, and a credit got placed on the talk page claiming an appearance on 26 June 2012, but I can not find it, either on the main page or the page Wikipedia:Recent_additions/2012/June#26_June_2012, as is claimed... am I missing something? I have to think that it has been skipped since it is the 27th now. Sorry to annoy, but this is my first DYK process. QFL 24-7 bla ¤ cntrb ¤ kids ¤ pics ¤ vids 00:50, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
DYK for Brown Treecreeper
[edit]On 28 June 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Brown Treecreeper, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Brown Treecreeper (pictured) spirals up and down tree trunks while foraging? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Brown Treecreeper. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Hi,
I'm reviewing your nomination and left a few comments at Talk:Pelican/GA1. I may add a few more. Worst problem is a "citation needed" tag. Great pictures! And love that video! MathewTownsend (talk) 22:34, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter
[edit]Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.
A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Good luck!
