Biography
[edit]University and baseball career
[edit]A native of West Allis, Wisconsin, Klores graduated from West Allis High School, where he played basketball.[1][2] He entered Northwestern University in 1934 as a liberal arts major; as a freshman, he played football and baseball.[2] In January 1935, Klores signed a contract to play with the Chicago Cubs, but his professional career never arose.[2][3] He instead played for various minor league teams over the next three years, including the Peoria Tractors, Asheville Tourists, Portsmouth Cubs, Huntington Red Birds, Martinsville Manufacturers, Montgomery Bombers, and Bloomington Bloomers.[3] In the off-season, Klores returned to Northwestern to study.[2]
Coaching career
[edit]Between 1937 and 1940, while still studying at Northwestern, Klores served as the university's assistant baseball coach under Burt Ingwersen.[4] In the spring of 1940, Ingwersen resigned to coach the football team, allowing Klores, a senior at the time, to rise to the position of head baseball coach.[4][5] This made him the youngest team coach in the Big Ten Conference and the only major university coach to be an undergraduate.[5]
The Northwestern team began their season with 36 players in March 1940.[6]
