Speedy Deletion

Please stop removing speedy deletion notices from articles that you have created yourself. If you continue to remove them, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. John Reaves 10:09, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Windbells, I have to delete Chen Wen Hsi for failure to assert notability. See WP:BIO for more information about what is normally permitted in Wikipedia. Unfortunately it looks as though Chen Wen Hsi is not notable enough for an encyclopedia entry, as his notability isn't even asserted right now.--Kchase T 17:44, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Gentle Reminder

Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, as you did much to Singapore-related articles of late. Please note the following reminders as per Wikipedia:policies and guidelines:

 • Lack of edit summary as per your edit history to date[1] This is considered an important guideline. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you amend or delete any text; otherwise, people may question your motives for the edit i.e. likely vandals or trolls.
 • Do add content citing a reliable source as per our policy of verifiability. Material that is unsourced or poorly sourced, especially on living persons may be removed immediately by other editors or admins.

Regards. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 05:29, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your guidance. I am still new and learning about the various rules and regulations on Wikipedia. My apologies for the problems I've caused. Regards. -- Windbells (talk) 05:50, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a fellow SGpedian, I just want to give u a heads up in case other editors/admins may misinterpret your good faith edits. As a signed-up user, it wld be in your interest to put up a short personal intro & your area of focus/contributions on your user page, so as to avoid any possible association to any WP:sockpuppet by some eager admins or RC patrollers (I've seen quite a few unnecessary disputes/distress caused to affected parties in previous cases). Do follow the discussion & assist or collaborate with fellow SGpedians whenever possible at Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board. Lastly, I wld like to thank u for adding a new pix for Venerable Ho Yuen Hoe & wiki-links for Gan Eng Seng School recently, both articles that were created by me previously. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 06:28, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I should thank you for creating the page for Venerable Ho, and I'm glad to contribute to your page on her, with the painting I've created for her. As a historian painter, this is what I aspire to do for people like her - and for our society :-)
Do feel free to criticise my actions in future so that I may learn to be a good Sgpedian like you, and the other veterans here -- Windbells (talk) 05:20, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm expressing my fair comments & observation, not criticisms earlier. Seeing that u are interested in history research too, I hope u cld write more new heritage-based articles for the benefit of the SGpedia community in the near future. Lastly, I've tidy up your userpage recently in returning u the 'favour' u did on the 2 mentioned articles earlier. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 15:43, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing that u have uploaded much images of late in your zeal in contributing to Wikipedia, are u sure that u have included the proper copyright tags based on the sources that were derived from newspapers, websites, edited scanned images etc? 'Cos I dun want to see u being 'hammered' hard by the administrators or copyright holders & the affected pix being nominated for deletion later. Pse stop & check the necessary copyright guidelines & licensing tags for images carefully. Do use only self-made images (shots taken on-site) or images from Wikimedia Commons for any new or existing articles instead. For a newbie, it wld be highly recommended to do copyediting & writing DYK-quality articles for a start, in order to gain relevant experience along the way. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 10:53, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your advice Aldwin...this question was put to me before (by a user Corvinus), and I did get a confirmation that it's alright to put images from newspapers...well, at least from Straits Times. I would like to quote a response by an ST journalist Sandra Leong, on a similar topic, and being posted on this following website [2]. It was in her response that i found out that my actions were acceptable, because 'there are no privacy laws in Singapore (sic: Straits Times)'. But that being said, I would always make it a point to name the source and date from which the image was taken from. So, I hope this clears things up once and for all.

Thanks for sharing your concerns with me. :-) Marcuslim (talk) 11:04, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, at least u got my msg loud & clear. Do consider submitting your new article, Chua Ek Kay‎, at the DYK Suggestion Board (Check its entry guidelines there) soon after its final touch-up is done. If it's successfully shortlisted by the DYK committee after a 5 day review, it will enjoyed 4-6 hrs of 'international fame' on the Main Page, which not only help to raise the profile of new SG-related articles but also a permanent credit to be added to the Honorable Mention list at SGpedia afterwards. Fyi, the SGpedian community aspires in having more DYK & GA quality articles as part of its quality drive in the long run. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 14:26, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chua Ek Kay: Improvements to article

Hi. I was thinking of creating an article about Chua Ek Kay, having read about his recent death. Glad to see that you beat me to it. Has anyone checked to see if there's an obituary in the English or Chinese newspapers? This may provide his date of birth and the names of his spouse and children. I'm not in Singapore so I don't have access to the papers. Also, it's great that the article is referenced by a number of newspaper articles, but these need to be incorporated into the article as in-line citations. If you want to continue this discussion, let's do so on the article's talk page. — Cheers, JackLee talk 01:51, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Chua Ek Kay" nominated for DYK

Hi. I've nominated Chua Ek Kay, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on February 14, where you can improve it if you see fit. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:59, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the recommendation Jack! Marcuslim (talk) 00:53, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, As I mentioned, I nominated this article to be featured in the "Wikipedia:Did you know" section on the main page. An editor has commented that the statement that "some of Singaporean artist Chua Ek Kay's abstract Chinese ink paintings were inspired by Australian aboriginal cave paintings" is unreferenced: see "Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on February 14". Are you able to insert a reference for that information? If you'd like to discuss the matter further, let's do it on the article's talk page. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:41, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An article which you started, or significantly expanded, Chua Ek Kay, was selected for DYK!

Updated DYK query On February 18, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Chua Ek Kay, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:YongPH.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 08:14, 2 March 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BorgQueen (talk) 08:14, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you BorgQueen for pointing to my error. As advised I've included necessary information that will state its right of usage and copyright to avoid any discrepancies in use. Thanks for pointing this out to me. cheers! Marcuslim (talk) 04:16, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query On 3 March, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Yong Pung How, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

That's great BorgQueen! Thanks for telling me this :) Marcuslim (talk) 10:29, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Marcus. You really need to stop indiscriminately uploading images to Wikipedia under Creative Commons licences when you aren't the copyright owner. Even if the source that you obtained the image from, such as The Straits Times, is probably not the copyright owner (for instance, of "Image:ZSaid.jpg"), as I mentioned before that doesn't mean you can upload it under a CC licence if you aren't the copyright owner. In such cases, you must either contact the copyright owners if you can find out who they are, or provide fair-use justifications, otherwise the images can't be used on Wikipedia. Do take steps to address this issue for all the images you've uploaded so far. — Cheers, JackLee talk 12:27, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jacklee, thank you for sharing your concerns, especially to my "reckless cowboy uploading" of ST's images. The fact that I thought it was ok to do so, was because I've done some background checks about similar issues regarding use of online images, and so happens to learn about a quote from response by an ST journalist Sandra Leong, about copyrights, and being posted on this following website http://tomorrow.sg/archives/2006/07/30/straits_times_infringes_on_copyr.html. It was in her response that i found out that my actions were acceptable, because 'there are no privacy laws in Singapore (sic: Straits Times)'. And again, I reiterate that for whatever images I've uploaded, I'd make it a point to name the source and date from which the image was taken from.
That being said, I've formally written an email to ST to clarify about rights of use for published materials, especially on their published images. I should be hearing from them in no time. Once I have this reply you will be able to receive a copy of this via email. Once again, thank you for sharing your concerns about me and my actions. I do continue to seek SGpedian's understanding and support to my work and efforts. Marcuslim (talk) 05:05, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Missing references/citations

Hi again, I would appreciate if u include the relevant references/citations for a section which u added in recently at the 'Blood-stained stone of Marshal_Terauchi'. This request is made not only to protect the integrity of the article as a whole but also for its possible selection for WP:GAN in the near future. Fyi, two of my previous articles, Gan Eng Seng & Venerable Ho Yuen Hoe are currently shortlisted as part of my contribution to the on-going GA Project for SGpedia. Thanks! -- Aldwinteo (talk) 01:15, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aldwin, we're both ever striving towards providing good quality articles on Wikipedia. Your point has been noted and taken, and i'll furnish them once citation sources are confirmed. Thanks! -- Marcuslim (talk) 01:23, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the earlier content addition & article formatting. Do read up on the criteria for GA & u will appreciate my earlier concern as some committed SGpedians (Read project report here) are currently using it as a quality benchmark for all SG-related article now. Fyi, I'm currently one of the three remaining GA writers in SGpedia & the only one left who actively research & contributed DYK/GA-quality articles on SG history & heritage to date. I hope u could assist us in this aspect once u have gained the relevant experience in the near future. Rgds. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 03:45, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, my apologies for throwing a spanner in your work - literally. I'm learning as fast as I can, and having a hard time catching up as well. I've kept the blood stone away for the time being, until i can find more substantial references to support the part...it was interesting really, but alas un-referenced...Goodness only three writers left...we're not talking about you, me and Jacklee are you? -- Marcuslim (talk) 01:41, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, the other SGpedian is Hildanknight as per GA contributions to date. u can see his latest posting here. Wrt the 'bloodstone' origins, it's more of a folklore that was spiced up by superstitious folks according to my previous research & site visit for the article. The red stains found were formed as a result of the presence of iron deposits inherent on the excavated rock itself, not 'blood stains' as mentioned in the folklore. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 07:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:MNicoll.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:MNicoll.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Speedy deletion of Image:ArthurYap.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:ArthurYap.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later." You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Thank you for uploading Image:JBjeya.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Polly (Parrot) 02:39, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:Pjeya.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Pjeya.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Speedy deletion of Image:YongPH.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:YongPH.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [3], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

 • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
 • add the relevant copyright tag.

Serious warning - from admin - STOP uploading copyrighted images

Please stop uploading images that are taken from copyrighted websites, as you did with Image:YongPH.jpg and Image:ChenWenHsi.jpg. Furthermore, do not mislead as to their copyright by adding incorrect templates. The Subordinate Courts and MOE have copyright notices at the bottom of their pages, thus we cannot use their images.

This is your last warning. The next time you upload a copyrighted image, or upload an image with a misleading copyright template, you will be blocked from editing and uploading. Pegasus «C¦ 05:29, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Pegasus, i appreciate the harsh warning and the threat. I tend to learn better with advice and guidance, as I have been after discussion with other users. I believe I have much to learn when it comes to the use of copyright templates, so I do seek your patience on the matter. Thank you -- Marcuslim (talk) 15:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
With regards to Image:Sinnathuray.jpg (and probably the majority of your other image uploads as well): The copyright on images in the National Archives' a2o database does not automatically lapse after 25 years. The access to unclassified public archives document does not even contain the word "copyright", so you cannot use it to claim that "since the image is more than 25 years old, it is copyright-free". This is a false conclusion. Unless a website specifically mentions in no uncertain terms that any person is free to change, distribute, and distribute changed versions of a photo for any purpose, or they state specifically that the image is "in the public domain", we cannot assume as such. "Open for public consultation" or any other wording is not the same as "in the public domain". Pegasus «C¦ 06:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see where you're getting at. I apologise for the inconvenience, and respect the actions as you deem fit, with regards to the images I posted. That being said, this lies another question about copyrights. If the subjects like paintings, books, memorabilia and a photograph of a person was publicly exhibited, and i took a picture of it, so how do i ascertain its copyright, and which form of copyright descriptions and tags would be the correct one to use in such a case? I'm hoping to hear from your experience as I can't seem to find a clear answer to this from Wiki help -- Marcuslim (talk) 03:12, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Marcus. Here are my views:
 • In general, if you are photographing something that itself possesses copyright (such as a painting or a photograph), you are creating a derivative version of the original copyrighted work. Derivative versions of a copyrighted work cannot be used without the copyright owner's permission. For instance, if you produced a painting and exhibited it, and I went to the exhibition and took a photograph of your painting, I would need your permission before publishing the photograph in a book or uploading it on to the Internet.
 • It is, of course, not easy to know whether something you are photographing is still protected by copyright. In general copyright lasts for 70 years from the date of the author's death. Works that were created more than a century ago are most likely free of copyright by now. If the author is alive, the work is certainly still copyrighted. If the author has passed away, you may have to do a bit of research and find out whether it is likely that the copyright in the work has expired. If you're not sure, don't upload it (unless you can justify fair use). It is the responsibility of uploaders to ensure that material uploaded to Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Commons is free of copyright or properly licensed by the copyright owner. — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:37, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi kintetsbuffalo, I must thank you for "saving" Williephua image, by updating it with the right license format. I must admit i have alot to learn on this aspect, if i want to continue my passions putting up the right images for my articles. To end, i wonder how does one know, what is the right license to use with each image - other than my own photographs that is? Once again, I thank you for your help! -- Marcuslim (talk) 01:53, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. I am not sure there is a system to know the right license. What I do is find a similar image on a related topic, then I custom fit the text for the image in question. Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 01:59, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ng Eng Teng

Hi, as u specialise on writing art-related articles, I wld like to suggest to u to write on Ng Eng Teng, a Cultural Medallion recipient in 1981 who has many of his critically-acclaimed works all over Singapore. He was briefly mentioned in one of my past writeups - Early Founders Memorial Stone. I hope u can write a DYK-quality article on him in the near future on behalf of the SGpedia community. Rgds. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 16:39, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi thanks for the suggestion. I'd make a note of that and work on it when i can -- Marcuslim (talk) 02:07, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for creating this article on one of our well-known sculptor master. I think u missed out his Cultural Medallion Award & major milestones part in your haste to create this article speedily. I was looking forward to see the same depth & quality like what u did on Chua Ek Kay previously (I enjoyed reading it) . Also it wld be advisable to start writing on an article once u got enuf 'beef' to do so; cos it'll not only serve as an interesting & educational read esp for non-native readers, but also help to stave off the deletist camp actively checking out on new articles on 'notability' grounds too. Lastly, do post your proposal at the talkpage of SGpedia esp when it touches matters that has an impact on a series of SG-related articles as a whole. It wld be useful to hear out their comments or to receive their community support on your suggestion first. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 13:18, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're most welcome Aldwin. Thanks for pointing that little slip on the Cultural Medallion...as time was limited for me, I could only research and contribute bit by bit..and that doesn't include making time to make sense of comments made by art critics about his works..LOL. I'll also move my query to the Sgpedian talk page, just to filter out more suggestions for the category of artists. Cheers -- Marcuslim (talk) 00:56, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As part of Wiki etiquette here, do provide a wiki-link to the 'Ng Eng Teng' article & signed off fully at the end of your posted comments at SGpedia & at the article talkpage in order to receive a favourable response. u may also consider posting a similar msg to your former collaborator on Chua Ek Kay, Jacklee, for his constructive feedback too. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 01:49, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes will do. I've made the amendments for wiki link to Ng Eng Teng. Just another question, say if Eng Teng has another name and i'd like to add the name in the searchlist, do i do a Move and type in the new name? -- Marcuslim (talk) 03:46, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, use the "move" function. (See an example done by an editor for Ven. Ho here) As for anything u wld like to propose (like the above example) or wanted to do, do read up on its related policies or check out similar precedents (incl. its discussion thread) done by other WikiProjects first. When there's no visible objection or further comments in a discussion (at times no response whatsoever) a week later, be Bold but not reckless (else u cld be warned, be reported at WP:ANI or worse faced a community ban later) to make the necessary changes for the common good of SGpedia/Wikipedia. In short, always make an informed decision after u have exercise the necessary due diligence & justification of your efforts. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 04:41, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A friendly advice

Based on this unfortunate episode, u may want to follow my usual practice in writing ONLY on deceased personalities (backed with multiple reliable 3rd party sources) or to do so when explicit permission is given by the living persons/institutions concerned, or refraining in writing/editing on any autobiographies at all in Wikipedia (let others sort out the mess subsequently), in order to avoid any unnecessary disputes or headaches in future. Fyi, I've escalated your case to an admin earlier. Should there be no final positive outcome & the vandalism still persists, I would suggest u to nominate the article for deletion next (as u are the original creator & primary contributor), as its integrity & notability has been greatly compromised. As u can see on hindsight, it's not worth your time, efforts & goodwill (also no due respect & appreciation was shown to all) to retain it in the long run. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 08:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am feeling the first spanner in my efforts to help Singapore artists, and it does dent my will a little after the episode, especially now the artist himself have written his displeasure to me. For now, i've replied him, and await his decision for the fate of the article. Once he says he wants it removed, then so be it - I will duly have it recommended for removal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Aldwin. You've been a good friend. --Marcuslim (talk) 09:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever the outcome, heck with it! Dun dwell too much on it. Moving forward, u can refocus your writings on more 'neutral-specific' articles like history, places, events or create/expand/refine on art-related articles such as its awards, painting styles, notable artistic works, architectural heritage, art-related templates etc, which are sorely lacking in SGpedia now (Also, please dun waste time uploading copyright images as they'll be tagged by the anti-fair use brigade for deletion subsequently). In doing so, u not only help to elevate the awareness on our local art scene with added depth in content (esp with DYKs), but most importantly, u will find yourself to be a happier & saner person in the long run here. Once your article is of certain quality, do nominate them for GA next, just like what I did previously for SGpedia. Isn't this a better choice? -- Aldwinteo (talk) 10:42, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you're right Aldwin. FYi, the artist has asked me to delete the article, and it has been recommended for deletion. It's time to move on, and like what you said, to write for other things/people that need our attention. But undoubtedly this episode creates a sad page in my heart for local artists - perhaps shedding a tone of why art never took off in Singapore in the first place. I hope i'm wrong... -- Marcuslim (talk) 02:14, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By virtue of their acts & short-sightedness, it shows that such people are not worth any mention nor your support here. As for due recognition & support, you'll not be surprised that 'angmohs' readily give credit where credit is due (also constructive criticism), as compared to our local folks here, including fellow SGpedians too, who are quick to criticise or complain but slow or hardly comment for a job well done (u can check my case here - That's one of the reasons why I choose to pursue an Australian-based education earlier & to take up overseas work stints where available). What feedback do one get from locals? Usual case of unfair criticisms, in-fighting or 'put me downs' - Sounded familiar in your profession too? It's no surprise to many why lots of our local musical/artistic/composer/sports talent are forced to venture abroad to pursue their passion. They only gained acceptance, kudos & financial support (govt grants, sponsors etc) here, after they've received numerous prestigious international awards or make it big ($$$) in the limelight. Some recent examples are Royston Tan ('881'), Tanya Chua, Sun Yanzi, A-do, JJ Lin, etc. Afterwards, the media here would rush to these folks for exclusive interviews (somewhat like 'carrying balls' in Hokkien) & add the "Singapore-born" label whenever they are mentioned in their intro. Pathetic isn't it? -- Aldwinteo (talk) 03:43, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
FYi, Royston Tan's big break was due to the fact that Eric Khoo provided $1M funding to Royston for his new movie - hence the success. (it's an open secret ppl talk about). So by and large, success indirectly equivalates to how much $$$ you have for funding your cause. Of course, to attract that kind of funding, yes you need to have receive a certain status. While I can shut myself off from other people's complains and gripes, this episode especially hurts where it hit me the most, because all this time I had believed that local artists never got their time of day because of the lack of opportunities to promote themselves, other than the usual few who got to - people like Tan Swie Hian and Ong Kim Seng. But taking stock of my what i did for artists so far, I've come to see some conclusion why they don't have exposure. With Tan Choh Tee's case, I get the impression that he is a private person, and doesn't need other people to know about him. By and large, many older generation artists I speak to, self-sabotage their careers as they think artists deserve to be poor, to be worthy of the name of being one. This Tan episode also taught me to be more selective on who to help - perhaps by first asking their permission and whether they want to be documented in the first place. At this point, I've come to be a champion of local artists, in the spirit of another late local arts champion Della Butcher, but a wiser champion to those who want to help themselves in the first place -- Marcuslim (talk) 04:10, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, life is a learning experience - one encountered both the good & bad during our journey here. Like the popular quip I always hear among the Hong Kongers (I was based in HK previously): "Dun dream man! Be 'seng mok' at all times!". Dun fret, your intention is good, it's their karma to bear, not yours. Although I'm not artistically trained like u, but I do share & support your aspirations & endeavours to promote & enhance art-related articles for SGpedia all these while. Cheers! -- Aldwinteo (talk) 15:26, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Aldwin...a friendly voice on this cold platform, akins to having coal brought to me during harsh winter (a chinese saying). I'll stick to dead artists for the time being -- Marcuslim (talk) 03:19, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Due to sensitivities involved, that would be a wise choice in the long term. Fyi, I've written ONLY 3 living biographies in Wikipedia to date, as a result of their exceptional contributions to their community (NOTE: I've no further plans to write on anyone else in future):
 1. Khoo Kheng-Hor (with permission including image use)
 2. Piya Tan (ditto)
 3. Teresa Hsu Chih (Unable to contact her prior to writing but see remarks below)
As for Teresa Hsu (at a grand old age of 111 today), being a highly respected humanitarian & a kind & broad-minded dame known by many here & abroad. I dun think she or her group of loyal supporters would fuss over the version, or object to anyone writing about her struggles & her charitable cause, if it's well sourced & documented factually. I'm pleased to note that some of the biographies/articles I wrote previously were featured in regional Wikipedias later - it means greater community acceptance & exposure when it spin-off into other languages afterwards, e.g. Deutsch & 中文. As a matter of principle, I do not expand or edit on any earlier biogrpahies done by previous editors, even on those whom I greatly admired & respect such as Elizabeth Choy (but I do mentioned about them wherever possible in my articles), except to monitor them for any vandalism like what I did for Lim Bo Seng previously. -- Aldwinteo (talk) 05:09, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pleased to inform that your AfD has been successfully acted upon by a closing admin today. Now, u & the other party can finally move on after this episode. Amituofo! I also learnt that my comments still carry some 'weight' despite being semi-retired here, & no longer active in hunting down hardcore trolls, vandals, sockpuppets nowadays. But I do kick ass when necessary (or provoked!). Cheers! -- Aldwinteo (talk) 14:02, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why, thank 'yer kindly, dear sirs...your presence serves well in getting the work done! And yes, both Tan and I can move on from there, and hopefully some time down the road we'll be able to read about him in our local papers - a politically correct one that he has intended for himself. Thanks for your help-- Marcuslim (talk) 02:06, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I hope there'll not be a repeat in history when I spotted an article created by u recently on a local politician, Ong Chit Chung. I highlight my concern as there's a likely possibility that u may have to contend with 'official bodies', anonymous supporters or detractors, saboteurs' (thru' vandalism), long heated debates or even with their family members or associates (like the recent TCT case which monitored your writings on him for months) in the near future, based on earlier cases that I've encountered, esp articles on our local politicians during my patrols previously. If u could remember well, even a biographical book (titled 'Goh Keng Swee - A Portrait') of Dr Goh Keng Swee's life written by his daughter-in-law, triggered a backlash from his family shorlty after it was launched locally last year, as being "an unauthorised version not fully endorsed by his family" (The Straits Times). As the Buddha often said in the Suttas: "As a human being, one is capable of though & decision-making. As such, do think carefully (or thrice or do your 'homework' well first) before one speak or act in order not to meet & suffer unwholesome karma later" -- Aldwinteo (talk) 01:21, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper article about C. Mary Turnbull

If you're interested in working on an Wikipedia article on Mary Turnbull, hope you noticed the article about her in today's Straits Times. — Cheers, JackLee talk 03:41, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for telling me about this Jack. Yes, i'm currently working on Mary Turnbull, along with other historians and other history buffs. It will be drafted and edited by them, before we make the final presentation on Wikipedia. I read the article you mention here, this morning and it makes a fine addition to the list of references on the wiki article about her. Cheers --Marcuslim (talk) 16:44, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings!

Are you the Marcus Lim who was featured on page 11 of the New Paper today? If so, congrats! While I am not into art, I do hope for more recognition of Singaporean art and artists.

Wikipedia is one of the ten most visited websites. Writing articles about Singaporean art and artists, as you have done, is a great way to increase awareness of Singaporean art and artists. Aldwinteo and I think you have the potential to be a prolific DYK and GA writer. Keep up the good work and feel free to ask us questions (though Aldwinteo is not as active nowadays). By the way, Jacklee and I are discussing a project to write Singapore-related DYKs and have them appear on the Main Page on National Day - if you are interested, do let me know and we will keep you informed.

Thanks for your time and contributions.

Hi Hildanknight, your name has been mentioned to me countless times, for great quality productions in the Wiki articles that you've touched. I'm happy to receive your message. Yes, i am the very Marcus Lim from New Paper, and from Straits Times last week featuring a painting of Mrs Hedwig Anuar. Yes indeed Wikipedia's now the most popular source of information; so much so that schoolteachers banned students from accessing it directly! LOL
With regards to your Singapore-related DYK project, it sounds interesting and hope i can contribute in whatever way i can, with my hectic schedule. As it is now, i'm already feeling bad leaving the artist articles i've started, due to a commission work i'm stuck with. So do feel free to check anything with me, as i will continue to seek your advice and from Jacklee on Wiki matters. Cheers! -- Marcuslim (talk) 00:48, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, Marcuslim! Happy New Year and may you have a wonderful 2009! Jacklee and Aldwinteo are far more experienced and prolific than me, but here are a few useful pointers and suggestions:
 • Writing GAs is a three-stage process: Research, Write, Polish. To become a prolific GA writer, you must master all three - this takes practice. (Researching for my first GA took me threee months, but now I usually take only one to two weeks to research for a GA.) You may also wish to familiarise yourself with the GA critera and read plenty of GAs to understand the standards expected of GAs (Chua Ek Kay is quite close to GA standard).
 • After my first GA nomination of I Not Stupid failed, I wrote two DYKs before again trying - this time successfully - to get I Not Stupid to GA status. Before writing your first GA, consider writing several DYKs to gain experience. Since DYKs have a five-day time limit, you only need to research and write; polishing is less important.
 • Hence I suggest you compile a list of 3-5 articles about Singaporean art or artists, that currently do not exist or are merely stubs, and that you wish to write about. Set yourself a target of writing DYKs on all of them. Choose one of them (saving the best for last) as your National Day DYK. (I will update you with details about the project soon.) After writing those DYKs, you should have more than enough experience to write GAs - and can start by improving your DYKs (which should already be near GA standard) until they can attain GA status.
 • Once you have written a few DYKs and GAs about Singaporean art and artists, you may wish to expand your horizons beyond art and write about other Singapore-related topics. Writing for Wikipedia is more fun when you have two or three main topics to write about, instead of just one. I used to only write about Singaporean movies, but am now branching out into other topics, such as local sports.
I hope you find these pointers and suggestions useful. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 11:09, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:MargaretLengTan.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Peripitus (Talk) 11:38, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Peripitus, i note your interest and direction to the image placed for Margaret Leng Tan. I googled and indeed we could find images for Margaret. But having said that the rights to the images available are subjected to the same copyrights as the image i've placed. So in the sense, I realise i've erred in my description, and should have clarified that 'all derivatives are in subject to the same copyrights'. I wonder if it's possible that i solve the problem that we have, by simply correcting that statement in conflict? Please advise -- Marcuslim (talk) 01:09, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File:NamikoChanTakahashi.jpg has been tagged as a replaceable non-free image as well. Mosmof (talk) 01:56, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The file File:NamikoChanTakahashi.jpg is an image from a newspaper article, as described in the description tags. It is not available anywhere, nor equivalents are available to replace the significance of the current image. Because of this, it cannot be tagged as a non-free image. -- Marcuslim (talk) 02:11, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but there is no critical commentary or discussion of the image itself, so its purpose in the article is decorative. And she's an active artist who is neither a recluse nor incarcerated, from what I understand, so under Wikipedia policies, pictures of such people are considered replaceable. --Mosmof (talk) 02:34, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please see Wikipedia:Fair use#Non-free image use in galleries. Non-free images should not be in articles unless they are specifically the topic of critical commentary. --Mosmof (talk) 02:41, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Mohammad Din Mohammad

A tag has been placed on Mohammad Din Mohammad requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. TallNapoleon (talk) 04:28, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, then the article needs to be less personal biography and more why he is important. TallNapoleon (talk) 08:18, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image permission problem with Image:GohST.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:GohST.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Please contribute to our National Day Project!

Greetings, Marcuslim! As I mentioned in our previous conversation, several SGpedians are planning a project to get Singapore-related articles on the Main Page on National Day. Please consider writing a DYK about a Singaporean artist or artwork for our project! I understand you have a hectic schedule, but I think three months is enough time to research and write a DYK - I, a JC student, plan to write four in three months! You could develop the article in a user subpage and seek help from other SGpedians (such as me) before moving it to mainspace on 5 August. --J.L.W.S. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:BVSSjasontan.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:BVSSjasontan.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Ng Eng Teng and fair use images

I've removed the "Studio sculptures" and "2-D Artworks" galleries from this article, as all the images in them were non-free images. Per WP:NFG, the use of non-free images in galleries is rarely supported. This is not a well justified case. We have three free images of works of this artist to depict his style. We do not need an additional 19 images to do so. I've tagged all the images in those sections as orphaned, placing them for deletion. If you have questions, I'm happy to answer. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:42, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Tan Keong Saik, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tan Keong Saik. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Templates

Hi, thanks for your work on China-related articles. Just FYI, templates like zh-sp, etc., are deprecated; you can just use zh, which has all the functionality of them and is simpler. rʨanaɢ (talk) 00:58, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Singaporean Buddhist nuns requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Fly by Night (talk) 01:16, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Singaporean Buddhist nuns requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Non-Free rationale for File:LokeWanTho.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:LokeWanTho.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under Non-Free content criteria but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a Non-Free rationale.

If you have uploaded other Non-Free media, consider checking that you have specified the Non-Free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Replaceable fair use File:HoMinFong.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:HoMinFong.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:48, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Bian Que may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
 • | birth_name = (

Orphaned non-free image File:CheongFCAnotherday.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:CheongFCAnotherday.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:27, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Neobaba.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Neobaba.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the file description page and add the text below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
 2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by many administrators since 2006. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:ManRayANightAtSaintJean.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:ManRayANightAtSaintJean.jpg.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Verbcatcher (talk) 18:18, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:TanChohTee.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Uploaded for Tan Choh Tee. No other use.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

File permission problem with File:ManjeetShergillDellaButcher.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:ManjeetShergillDellaButcher.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as non-free fair use or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:01, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
