Schiehallion is a popular mountain with walkers due to its accessibility, easy path up and spectacular views. The origin of the name is unclear but "Fairy Hill of the Caledonians" is usually put forward. Its isolated position and regular shape led Nevil_Maskelyne to use the deflection caused by the mass of the mountain to estimate the mass of the earth in a ground-breaking experiment in 1774. Schiehallion was purchased by the John Muir Trust [1] in 1999.
