Shruthi Chandrasena, known by her stage name Hariprriya, is an Indian film actress and model who predominantly works in Kannada and Telugu films. She has also appeared in a number of Tamil, Malayalam, and Tulu films as well. She gained recognition for her role in Ugramm and for her performances in Ranna, Ricky, Neerdose, Bharjari, Samhaara, Jai Simha, Bell Bottom, Soojidara and D/O Parvathamma.

Early life

Hariprriya was born on 29 October 1991[4] and hails from the town of Chikkaballapur.[5] She completed her schooling there, also training in Bharatanatyam. Later, her family moved to Bangalore, where she completed her pre-university course.[5][6][7][8]. In 2013, at her mother's urging, she changed the spelling of her name from Haripriya to Hariprriya[9] for good luck, though Hariprriya said she does not believe in numerology.[9]

Career

Early work (2007–2014)

Hariprriya used to participate in cultural programmes. When she was studying in 12th class, director Richard Castelino saw stills of her from the programmes and offered her the female lead role in the Tulu film Badi.[10][11] She made her Kannada film debut in Manasugula Mathu Madhura (2008), following which she was part of Vasanthakala. Her performance in the political satire Kallara Santhe (2009) earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Kannada actress, while her next film Cheluveye Ninne Nodalu released to rave reviews,[12][13] making Hariprriya popular in Karnataka.[14] In 2010, she also forayed into the Tamil and Telugu film industries with Kanagavel Kaaka,[15] and Bhumika Chawla's maiden production, Thakita Thakita, respectively, with the latter emerging a moderate success.[16] After that, she became busy with Tamil and Telugu projects, working on Cheran's Muran in Tamil and Pilla Zamindar in Telugu.[17] She was also part of the political drama Mukhyamantri I Love You, produced in 2008, which has not been released.[18] She debuted in Malayalam with Thiruvambadi Thampan."[19] In her third Telugu film Abbayi Class Ammayi Mass, she played a call girl[20] and she did a two-week-long workshop to get into the character.[21]

Ugram success and breakthrough (2014–2016)

In 2014, she returned to Kannada cinema with the gangster film Ugramm. The New Indian Express wrote that it was "a strong performance by Hariprriya, who is natural in her act".[22] The film went on to become a major commercial success and she was said to have made a "sensational comeback to Kannada films".[23] Sify wrote that Ugramm "did wonders to Hariprriya" as she subsequently offered more Kannada projects.[24] After the success of Ugram she gained popularity in the Kannada film industry and she became one of the most wanted heroines in the industry. She accepted to be part of the big banner films, Ranna and Ricky[25] as well as the comedy film Bullet Basya. Ranna was her first release in 2015 where she was first time paired for Sudeep. The movie became hit at the box office. Her second release in the year is Bullet Basya where she was paired opposite Sharan and the movie did partially well at the box office and Hariprriya gained positive response for her role Kaveri in the film. In 2016 her first release was Ricky opposite Rakshit Shetty where she played as Radha a Naxalite, for which she had reduced her weight by half. The critics wrote that "The performance of Hariprriya in the film was appreciated." Her next release in the year was Ranatantra where she was paired opposite Vijay Raghavendra. She was also seen in a special appearance in a song in Bhale Jodi. Her next release in the year was Neer Dose where she played the character Kumudha a bar dancer. The movie became a blockbuster hit. The critics wrote that "Hariprriya has essayed a powerful role in her career. Her performance in the movie is phenomenal". The movie turned out to be a turning point in her film career.

Established actress (2017–present)

After Neer Dose's movie success, she turned out to be one of the top heroines of the Kannada Film Industry. After Neer Dose, she got numerous offers where she could play different characters. In 2017, she had only one release that is Bharjari opposite Dhruva Sarja where she played the character Haasini a North Karnataka girl. It was her and Rachita Ram combination second movie after Ranna. The New Indian Express paper wrote that "Hariprriya has a good role in the movie. Her character is the main turning point for the story." She also appeared in a special appearance in Anjaniputra starring Puneeth Rajkumar in the lead role, in a song 1234 Shille Hodi.[26] In 2018 her first release was her comeback into Telugu film industry alongside Balakrishna in the movie Jai Simha[27][28] where she played the character Manga a mechanic. The movie became a blockbuster hit. Her next release was in Kannada with Duniya Vijay under R.Chandru directional Kanaka[29][30] where she played the character Sampige a young widow who will fall in love with the hero. Her next release was Samhara[31][32][33] along with Chiranjeevi Sarja where she essayed a negative character. The New Indian Express wrote that "Hariprriya’s performance as a negative character is phenomenal. She got a chance to prove her versatility of acting in the movie." Her next release in the year was Life Jothe Ondh Selfie [34][35][36][37] where she was paired alongside Prem, Prajwal Devraj and Dhananjay. The Times of India wrote "Hariprriya has played the modern girl Rashmi who has lots of pains from her past. She has essayed the character very well." Her 2019 first release is Bell Bottom [38][39][40][41][42] where she is paired opposite Rishab Shetty who is debuting into acting through this film. The movie became the biggest blockbuster film of 2019. The writers of The New Indian Express wrote "Hariprriya’s character as the innocent but intelligent love interest is well placed". The writers of Times of India wrote "Hariprriya delivers yet another solid act, showing why she is considered as one of the most versatile actresses around right now". The writers of The Deccan Chronicle wrote "It is Hariprriya, who yet again finds a perfect character and is at her charming best playing Kusuma."Her next release of the year is Soojidaara [43][44][45] where she is paired opposite newbie Yeswanth shetty and directed by Mounish Badiger where she plays the role of a middle class woman. Her next release of the year is D/O Parvathamma[46][47][48][49] which is her 25th Kannada film being directed by J Shankar which has Sumalatha Ambareesh, Suraj Gowda and Prabhu Mundukar in the lead roles. Her next next release isNaganna's multistarer film Kurukshetra[50][51][52][53] where she is paired opposite Darshan which also includes Ambareesh, Arjun Sarja, Meghana Raj, Nikhil Kumarswamy, Sneha, V.Ravichandran, Sonu Sood, Danish Akthar Saif , Yashas Surya, P.Ravishankar , Srinath, Bharthi Vishnuvardhan, Aditi Arya and Pragya Jaiswal. Her next is Tejaswi's Ellide Illi Tanaka[54][55][56][57][58] where she is paired opposite Srujan Lokesh where she essayed the character Nnadini and got huge applause for her role in the film by both critics and audience. The Chitraloka review metioned that "it is Hariprriya who steals the show with yet another sensible character. It makes the audience fall in love with her portrayal of Nandini's character on screen."[59] The writers of The New Indian Express wrote "Hariprriya not only adds the glamour quotient, plays an integral part in the proceedings.[60]"The writers of The Deccan Chronicle wrote "If Srujan shines with comedy, it is Hariprriya who steals the show with yet another impressive act. Her beautiful presence gives another good reason not to miss Ellidde Illi Tanaka".[61]Her next release of the year is Mayura Raghavendra's directional Kannad Gothilla[62][63][64][65] which also has Sudharani in the cast. The writers of Deccan Herald wrote"Kannad Gothilla’ does justice to Hariprriya’s ability to pull off roles with serious undertones. She is a perfect mix of grace and control, proving once again that a ‘hero’ isn’t a necessity when she is in action. The film is a perfect gift for Harripriya, who tried her best to anchor an underwhelming ‘D/O Parvathamma’, another film in which she played an investigative officer. But in that film directed by Shankar, her role was steeped in stereotypes. [66]

Upcoming projects

As of October 2019[67][68], Hariprriya has a total of five releases. Hariprriya's next release will include Katha Sangama[69][70][71], directed by Rishab Shetty and Kiran Raj, where she is once again paired with Rishab Shetty after Bell Bottom. Her next is Hari Santosh's historical novel-based movie Bicchugatti – Chapter 1- Dalvayi Dange[72][73][74] where she is paired opposite Rajavrdhan. Her next is Vijay Kiran's Kappal remake which is made under Jyanna Combines where she is paired opposite Gurunandhan.[75][76][77] Her next is Baraguru Ramachandrappa's Amruthamathi where she is essaying the titular character.[78][79][80]
