Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is a third-person shooter action role-playing video game developed by Dimps for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows based on the Sword Art Online light novel series. It is the fifth game in the series and is the successor to the 2016 game Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization. The PlayStation 4 version were released in Japan on February 8, 2018, with a worldwide release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on February 23.

Taking place in the virtual reality MMORPG (VRMMORPG) Gun Gale Online, Fatal Bullet features an alternate timeline to the light novels and anime.

Gameplay

Unlike past installments, Fatal Bullet features original character creation and the usage of firearms in battle,[1] though other weapons like Kirito's photon sword are also available. As the player progresses through the story, they can also unlock the ability to dual-wield a gun and photon sword in a similar manner to Kirito.[2] A third-person shooter and role-playing game hybrid, players can level up and gain skills as the game progresses. While fighting, players are provided with a wire that can allow them to quickly move around; although the wire is not in the canonical Gun Gale Online, a Bullet Line system – which serves as an assist in defending the user – is included in Fatal Bullet.[3]

The game features multiplayer, which allows players to form four-man cooperative parties or fight against one another in four-on-four player versus player (PvP) matches.[1] In PvP deathmatches, players are split into Alpha and Bravo teams, fighting each other in addition to computer-controlled enemies.[2]

As in previous installments, the player can engage in bed conversations with other characters; as Kirito, one can do so with those in the canon, while the protagonist avatar has such dialogues with characters from the game universe.[4]

Synopsis

Fatal Bullet takes place in Gun Gale Online, a VRMMORPG that was introduced in the second season of the anime.[1] Following the events of Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, GGO was released by Zaskar following the advent of The Seed.

The player creates their own character, who joins GGO alongside their friend Kureha. During the story, the pair meet ArFA-sys, a humanoid AI, along with the rest of the main cast.[5] In contrast with the light novels and anime, characters like Asuna and Leafa are present in GGO.[1] Other new characters introduced in the game include Basalt Joe, a powerful player who frequently challenges the protagonist to claim ArFA-sys,[2] Zeliska, a strong yet friendly player who also has an ArFA-sys, and Itsuki, a strategist and sniper with a preference for using traps like land mines.[6]

The final chapter of the main campaign also offers a branching ending based on player choice and provides a third ending, called "True Ending" as the canon ending.

Series author Reki Kawahara supervised development of the game's story.[1] As the game progresses, the player can switch to Kirito Mode, which allows them to play a different storyline.[6]

Synopsis

Setting and Character

Sword art online: fatal bullet Downloadable Content (DLC) takes place before you and the group have completed the SBC Flügel and complete the game.

This game follows an alternate timeline from the previous game rather than the original series because this happens before the Death gun incident where that will be the first time Kirito dive into Gun Gale Online to stop death gun. In the first DLC ambush of the imposter it introduces three new characters that play a role in the plot: “Dyne”, the leader of a PvP squadron that primarily targets weaker low risk opponents “Musketeer X” a participant in the 3rd BoB and “Yamikaze” an Agi type player and a participant in the 2nd and 3rd BoB.[7]

In the second DLC  Betrayal of comrades they introduce three more characters “Clarence” who shows up in Sword art online alternative, Kirishima “Shirley” Mai who is a nature guide and a hunter in Hokkaido[8] and “Lievre” she is a ArFA-sys that was introduced in the end of the second  DLC.

in the third DLC Collapse of Balance they introduce two more character “Alice synthesis thirty”  one of the main character in sword art online Alicization who is a integrity knight and “Eugeo” one of the deuteragonist of the half of Alicization arc and Kirito best friend and partner in the story[9].

in the fourth DLC Dissonance Of The Nexus Expansion they introduce four new characters Nochizawa “Eiji” Eiji is one of the antagonists of Ordinal scale and a Sao survivor as well, Shigemura “Yuna” Yuuna  she is a diva and one of the main character of ordinal scale Nanairo "Seven" Arshavin, an idol and Russian scientist studying virtual reality and “Sachi” she was one of the players that were trapped in Sao and was killed in the 27th floor.[10]

Plot

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet - Ambush of the Imposters

This journey takes place before you and the group have completed the SBC Flügel. There have been Rumors have been circulating about several ArFA-sys units appearing out in the field as enemies.[11] The Player along with Kureha and Itsuki decides to check out the places where they are seen spawning, in the end, they manage to encounter the ArFA-sys unite that have the same appearance of Kureha and Itsuki.[12]

As your pursuing the ArFA-sys unite you meet up with Zeliska and the GGO players Dyne, Yamikaze,[13] and Musketeer X,  when suddenly a copy Zeliska shows up, and from there Zeliska is sure that the copy are past version of certain players.[14]

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet - Betrayal of Comrades

In Betrayal of Comrades, A Copies of Kirito and Asuna appeared and wreaking havoc,[15] the players who seek the truth surrounding these ArFA-sys when to search for the Kirito and Asuna copies in a dungeon.[16]

As the ventures the dungeon they manage to found the Kirito copies and mange to make him retreats when suddenly a mysterious ArFA-sys by the name Lievre that look likes Rei.[17] as they are taking they were meet by Two new characters, Clarence and Shirley that was hunting the copies who in the end decide to attack the player's group.[18]

As the player ventures deeper into the dungeon, Kureha started to suspect Liever[19] and in the end, she shows her true self[20] and escapes while the player has to deal with the copies of Kirito and Asuna.  

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet - Collapse of Balance

Collapse of Balance takes place right after the events of the previous Betrayal of Comrades DLC and after hearing about Lievre plot the player decide to hurry back to Glocken when they meet up with Kirito and Asuna as they were discussing not only enemy ArFA-sys started appearing but Alice and Eugeo also appeared out of nowhere.[21]

After manage to regroup with everyone Kureha explains Lievre plan to destroy the safe zone in GGO. after discussing the player along with Alice and Eugeo when into a dungeon that was said that a Lievre was spotted entering.[22]

After managing to stop Lievre plant liever who uses processing speed that exceeds her limit become disable and because of that she was put in a self-repair mode and will take a while to wakes up.[23]

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet - Dissonance Of The Nexus Expansion

In the new expansion pack, Dissonance of the Nexus, players will get to experience a completely new scenario where Kirito and friends find themselves exploring a new dungeon rumored to be haunted.[24]

As they ventured into the dungeon they meet with Eiji who ask to join them as he was looking for someone inside the game[25] as they when further Kirito saw Sachi a person that was supposed to have died in Sao.

As they try to unveil the mystery the notice that as time pass Sachi grows weaker and so Kirito thinks the appearance of Sachi has something to do with this new expansion,[26] after manage to clear the event Sachi data that was given to Kirito with the help Lievre they manage to bring her back as a copy of the original Sachi.[27]

Development

The game was announced on August 18, 2017. Developed by Dimps, Fatal Bullet runs on Unreal Engine 4;[1] a Siliconera writer described the gameplay as bearing some similarity to Freedom Wars, another game produced by Dimps.[3]

Fatal Bullet is the first in the SAO series to be available on Xbox One and PC,[1] the latter being downloadable through Steam.[28]

Reception

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet received "mixed or average" reviews, according to video game review aggregator Metacritic.[29][30][31] IGN had a mixed rating, saying: "...the poor story pacing and the repetitive nature of exploration dragged it down. While it’s a good change of pace for games based on SAO, it still lacks the polish needed to really stand out." Rating the PlayStation 4 version a 7/10, indicating "Good", Josh Tolentino from Destructoid said it was: "Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun."[32]
