Production

Development

Sam Wasson's critically acclaimed biography was sold to FX Network by executive producer George Stelzner, who pursued Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and Tommy Kail (Hamilton) to join the project. On July 5, 2018, FX announced an eight-episode order for a television limited-series, to be entitled "Fosse/Verdon," with Sam Rockwell performing the role of Bob Fosse and Michelle Williams performing the role of Gwen Verdon. Tony Award winner Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) will serve as showrunner for the limited-series and write the first episode, which will be directed by Thomas Kail. Executive producers of the production include Miranda, Kail, Levenson, Rockwell, Williams, and Stelzner. Additionally, Nicole Fosse, daughter of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, will serve as a co-executive producer. Choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (In The Heights/ Hamilton) will be a co-producer. Production companies will include Fox 21 Television Studios, FX Productions, Kail's Old 320 Sycamore label and Stelzner's West Egg Studios. On October 25, 2018, it was reported that Kail will direct at least four of the eight episodes of Fosse/Verdon.[7] A day later, it was announced that Joel Fields joined the production as an additional writer and executive producer.[8] On January 23, 2019, it was announced that the series will premiere on April 9, 2019.[9]

Casting

Alongside the series order announcement, it was confirmed that Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams had been cast in the lead roles of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, respectively.[1] On November 19, 2018, it was announced Margaret Qualley and Norbert Leo Butz had been cast in series regular roles and that Aya Cash, Nate Corddry, Susan Misner, Bianca Marroquín, Kelli Barrett, Evan Handler, Rick Holmes, Paul Reiser, Ethan Slater, Byron Jennings, and Laura Osnes had joined the cast cast in a recurring capacity.[10]

Principal photography for the series commenced in November 2018 in New York City, New York and lasted until March 2019.[7][11]
