History

Greek and Roman Antiquity

At the southeastern end of Neo Souli, on the hill called “Agrianista”, the location of an ancient settlement has been identified, which present a lifetime from prehistoric to modern years.[1] In Roman times the settlement belonged to the territory (“chora”) of the city of Sirra (Serres today), from which it was administratively dependent.[2] South of Neo Souli the ancient necropolis was extended, where various archaeological findings (vases, reliefs, coins etc.) were found, as well as Greek inscriptions of Roman (imperial) period.[3]
