Tirol (in English sometimes spelled Tyrol) is a state (Bundesland) of Austria. The mountainous region is located in the West of Austria, its neighbors are Vorarlberg in the West and Salzburg and Kärnten in the East. It is split into two parts, separated by about 15 km of the state Salzburg. The northern and southern borders of the larger (western) part constitute Austria's borders to Germany and Italy, respectively.

The capital is Innsbruck. The town is known for the university, especially the modern techniques in medicine.

The Tyrol is popular for the famous skiing resorts, such as Kitzbühel. Other larger towns are Kufstein, Schwaz, Reutte and Landeck.
