The Southern Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park, informally known as the Las Vegas Zoo, was a 3-acre (1.2 ha), nonprofit Zoological park and botanical garden located in Las Vegas, Nevada that closed in September 2013.[2] It was located northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, about 15 minutes away.[1] It focused primarily on the education of desert life and habitat protection. Its mission statement was to "educate and entertain the public by displaying a variety of plants and animals".[1] An admission fee was charged. The park included a small gem exhibit area and a small gift shop at the main exit. The gift shop and admission fees helped support the zoo.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) — Fire investigators are probing a Saturday evening fire that destroyed the old Las Vegas Zoo building.

Las Vegas fire dispatchers received numerous 9-1-1 calls at 8:13 p.m. Saturday that the building at 1775 N. Rancho Drive (at Melody Lane) was on fire.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting 50 feet into the air from the roof of the one story wood frame/vacant building. There were no nearby buildings that the fire could spread to, so firefighters concentrated on attacking the main fire, which involved the entire interior of the building.

Within 15 minutes firefighters from Las Vegas and North Las Vegas had the bulk of the fire under control, they declared a complete knockdown within 45 minutes.

The fire destroyed the building. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. People who live near the building told fire investigators that squatters were seen going in and out of the building on a regular basis. There was even one report that someone was seen leaving the building just prior to the fire.

There were no reported injuries during the incident. The fire closed southbound Rancho Drive for approximately two hours.

Arrangements are being made to have the building torn down because of a danger of collapse.
