Higashi-Himeji Station (東姫路駅, Higashi-Himeji-eki, lit. "East Himeji Station") is a planned railway station to be built on the JR Kobe Line in Nada-ku, Kobe, Japan, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West). It is scheduled to open in spring 2016.

Lines

Higashi-Himeji Station will be served by the JR Kobe Line (part of the Sanyo Main Line). Located between Gochaku and Himeji, it will be 86.0 km from Osaka Station. Both limited-stop "Rapid" services and all-stations "Local" services will stop at this station.[1]

Station layout

The station will have two opposed side platforms serving two elevated tracks, with the station building situated at ground level.

Facilities and accessibility

The station will have two lifts: one for each platform.

History

Details of the new station were formally announced by JR West on 2 October 2015.[2] While the most popular name voted for in the public ballot held to select the new name was actually Shirasagi (or Hakuro) (白鷺), popular names for Himeji Castle, the second-place name of Higashi-Himeji was ultimately chosen by JR West, as this was deemed less likely to cause confusion among tourists who might mistakenly assume that the station was the closest to Himeji Castle.[1] The total construction costs of JPY 2.7 billion will be shared equally by JR West, the city of Himeji, and the national government.[2]

Passenger statistics

The station is expected to be used by an average of approximately 6,000 passengers daily.[3]
