John Marshall Evans is the current U.S. Ambassador to Armenia.

He was born in Williamsburg, Virginia and he studied Russian History at Yale University. He is fluent in Russian, Farsi and several other languages[1].

He had served in the foreign service since 1972. He had served in Iran (1972-1974), Czechoslovakia (1975-1978), Soviet Union (1981-1983), the US mission to NATO, and as deputy director of the Soviet desk.

John Evans served as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Armenia but was subsequently removed for angering Turkey by making statements recognizing the Armenian Genocide [2]. The U.S. State Department is believed to have removed him under pressure from Turkey who has actively attempted to suppress the recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide[3]. The U.S. State Department brought in a new candidate for position of US Ambassador to Armenia named Robert Hoaglund but his nomination was stalled in Congress.
