Tiverton Rugby Club is a rugby union club based in the town of Tiverton, Devon, England. The club plays at Coronation Field, and as of the 2012/13 season competes in the Level 8 Tribute Cornwall/Devon league and the Devon Intermediate Cup. It is considered to be the oldest sports club in Devon.[citation needed]

Club history

Rugby was first played in Tiverton in 1868 against Blundell's School on the edge of the town. Using the school’s own rules there were 20 players in each team, no flags, a referee and two umpires and it was known as the "carrying game".[1] In the 1870s the rugby rules were adopted and for a few years the Tiverton team played not only against the school but also against teams from towns within commuting (horse and cart) distance such as Crediton, Exeter and Wellington.

In the 1880s the club was regarded as one of the top clubs in the South West. During this period the Devon Rugby Football Union started the annual competition for a cup and in 1888 Tiverton were the first winners.[2]

Since then the sport has at times almost been forgotten in the town while at others there were as many as four town clubs competing against each other. In the 1980s the club was three times champions of the pre-league Devon Merit Table and four times winners of the Devon Colts Cup. In 1998, the club won the Devon Cup again following victory over Torquay on their own ground.[2]
