1997 saw the birth of the Singapore Cup, known in 1997 as the Singapore League Cup. 1998 would see the competition renamed the Singapore Cup and after exactly 10 years later, another tournament was launched as Singapore League Cup despite there is no link between the two.
This first edition of the compeititon would feature nine teams drawn into three groups of three teams playing on a home and away basis. The group winners and best runner up would qualify for the semi finals.
